( ![]() This book took a while to bring the multiple threads together, but it was worth the wait. I became engrossed in the various stories, especially that of Lily and Edward. This is the story of people linked by a house -- a house that provided refuge to so many, but also one where a tragedy occurred In the 1860s, we have the artist, Edward Radcliffe, engaged to a suitable young lady, but in love with his model, Lily. Lily has been abandoned by her father and has led a life of petty crime, but meeting Edward has changed her. In modern times, we have Elodie, an archivist who is drawn to Lily's picture and driven to find out her story. And in between, we have various people who have been touched by the house at the centre of the story. Well written...great characters. Loved it. An utterly captivating novel. This story is written with a depth and eloquence that kept me riveted throughout. The plot is complex and decade-spanning, and I found myself itching to know more about the characters and their histories. I cannot recommend this book enough. I'm glad I took a chance on it. You should too. I loved this book, but there were a few things that made it fall short for me. The biggest thing for me was all the different time frames. There were five or maybe six different time-lines in this book from 1862 to 2017 and everything in-between. I got really lost by the end and they all collide together in the last section of the book. Also, there were just too many coincidences and too much dovetailing of people and storylines for my logical brain to believe. The third thing that just didn't work for me were some of the characters and their various relationships. It kind of got all muddled up at the end. But the rest of the book was absolutely wonderful. The descriptions, the language, the main characters, the plot and the lovely paranormal happenings that are used to hold everything together. This is a very imaginative premise for a book, and it all centres around a very old house called Birchwood Manor located in the English countryside. This is a multi-layered love story that stretches throughout 150 years. At the centre of it all is a very likeable ghost by the name of? -- well we didn't know her real name until the end of the book, but I'll call her Lily. I am intrigued enough to read another of Kate Morton's books, if only for the beautiful and magical language that I found in this one.
