A lot of politics, past and present, that I'm not familiar with - not the players or the history. That made it hard to get into the story. The three threads were also very confusing; I was nearly halfway through the book before I could identify the players and understand the relationship of the three (the timeline tangle didn't help!). The headers helped a little, telling me which one I was dealing with - but the names are odd enough I had a hard time remembering which was which. When I finally understood enough to be sucked into the story, though, it was extremely rich and complex. A lot of lies and secrets, and Allaigna reacts very much as a teenager - though I found her stubborn refusal to accept friendship or comfort, from childhood, even more annoying. I do want to see what happens but I don't expect it to be good - she's going to come up against (more of) the real world and... Not really aimed at me - I dislike manipulators, and the book is full of them (competent and incompetent!). Some very popular books I dislike for the same reason, so this may go the same way - The Lies of Locke Lamora or The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Well-written, rich, complex, train-wreck fascinating. ( ) I really enjoyed Allaigna's Song: Overture, the first in a trilogy. Allaigna, her mother, and her grandmother tell their stories. It was a bit confusing at first sorting out the characters and timelines but it kept me intrigued and I enjoyed how the stories were spun out. As the title suggests, it is like reading a song. I am looking forward to reading the next book. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. I really enjoyed this. The characters were well developed and interesting. Plot was well paced. näyttää 5/5 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

When Allaigna was seven she almost sang her baby brother to sleep -- forever. She may be heir to neither her mother's titles nor her secrets, but she has inherited her grandmother's dangerous talent for singing music into magic. As her education proceeds from nursery to weapons ground to the rank of royal page, it becomes increasingly hard to keep her heritage and abilities hidden.Secrets, it seems, are stock-in-trade for her family, and as Allaigna works to keep her own, she uncovers two that will affect both her life and the unstable peace of the Ilmar nations. One is the fate of her grandmother, who married a prince, turning the gift of the Sight into a double-edged weapon of state. The other is the truth behind her mother's two-week disappearance following an ambush by outlaws en route to her wedding. As she discovers who she is, Allaigna must decide what to become: the skilled courtier her mother wants her to be, the political chess piece her father bargained on, or the hero her grandmother foresaw. Allaigna's Song: Overture is a love story, a family saga, and a coming-of-age novel that braids together the stories of daughter, mother, and grandmother into a rich and deftly woven narrative. Readers are saying "Beautiful writing and gripping storytelling throughout." "Allaigna, Lauresa, and Irdaign are tough, flawed, and appealing heroines." "Great tension, big world, perfect pacing, intriguing politics and lovely magic." "Magically unputdownable " Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
