A bold, heartfelt tale of life at Green Gables ... before Anne: A marvelously entertaining and moving historical novel, set in rural Prince Edward Island in the nineteenth century, that imagines the young life of spinster Marilla Cuthbert, and the choices that will open her life to the possibility of heartbreak, and unimaginable greatness. Plucky and ambitious, Marilla Cuthbert is thirteen years old when her world is turned upside down. Her beloved mother dies in childbirth, and Marilla suddenly must bear the responsibilities of a farm wife: cooking, sewing, keeping house, and overseeing the day-to-day life of Green Gables with her brother, Matthew and father, Hugh. In Avonlea, a small, tight-knit farming town on a remote island, life holds few options for farm girls. Her one connection to the wider world is Aunt Elizabeth "Izzy" Johnson, her mother's sister, who managed to escape from Avonlea to the bustling city of St. Catharines. An opinionated spinster, Aunt Izzy's talent as a seamstress has allowed her to build a thriving business and make her own way in the world. Emboldened by her aunt, Marilla dares to venture beyond the safety of Green Gables and discovers new friends and new opportunities. Joining the Ladies Aid Society, she raises funds for an orphanage run by the Sisters of Charity in nearby Nova Scotia that secretly serves as a way station for runaway slaves from America. Her budding romance with John Blythe, the charming son of a neighbor, offers her a possibility of future happiness, Marilla is in no rush to trade one farm life for another. She soon finds herself caught up in the dangerous work of politics, and abolition, jeopardizing all she cherishes, including her bond with her dearest John Blythe. Now Marilla must face a reckoning between her dreams of making a difference in the wider world and the small-town reality of life at Green Gables.--Amazon.… (lisätietoja)

A Very good book, looks back at Marilla when young and also Rachel Lynde, the reasons Marilla and Matthwe never married and makes for a very good pre-quel to the series by Montgomery ( )

My problem with this book is that the author doesn’t seem very interested in writing about Marilla. I feel like she’d rather write a book about her OC, Aunt Izzy, and while that story would make for an awesome book—a fiercely independent woman breaks off her engagement and leaves her twin sister behind in their small hometown in order to become a dressmaker who finds love with an ex-slave in her twilight years—it doesn’t leave that much room to explore what made Marilla the Marilla we see in Anne of Green Gables. We get a healthy bit of her relationship with John Blythe but it’s never really clear to me why it didn’t work out. It feels more like they end the relationship because we know that they don’t get together so they have to drift apart for flimsy reasons. We don’t get much of her relationship with her lifelong best frenemy Rachel Lynde and we get almost nothing of her relationship with her brother Matthew, inarguably the most important person in her life other than Anne. I kept trying to decide if I would like this book more if I wasn’t such a big fan of Anne of Green Gables but I don’t know that I would have even picked it up if I wasn’t. It’s short, which is a plus as I get to the end of this year’s reading challenge and it’s not badly written but I guess I just didn’t get the point of it. There’s probably better Anne of Green Gables fanfic out there and you wouldn’t have to pay anything to read it. ( )

This is a loving and poignant tribute to the Anne series' greatest woman: Marilla. She is strong, vulnerable, and flawed, with a deep sense of justice and mercy. I highly recommend this book. ( )

It's been years since I've teared up while reading a book. Sarah McCoy did such a wonderful job letting us into Marilla's world. Marilla is such an iconic character, one that I daresay Anne of Green Gables readers have always wanted to know more about.

The last two chapters of this book, especially, were so well done. I felt like I was there with Marilla, feeling all the things she was feeling. Good narration too. No complaints there. Easy to slip into the world of the book and stay there, which is one of the criteria I look for in an audiobook.

It's been a while since I've reread Anne of Green Gables and I want to do it soon, since I know there are references I would have noted, had I recently reread the first Anne book. I'm looking forward to making those connections between Marilla of Green Gables and Anne of Green Gables. It'll feel like seeing an old friend.

A really sweet story which makes me want to re-read Anne of Green Gables. I love historical fiction about an opinionated woman and Marilla does not disappoint. Fun reading. ( )

The spring was abroad in the land and Marilla's sober, middle-aged step was lighter and swifter because of its deep, primal gladness.
Her eyes dwelt affectionately on Green Gables, peering through its network of trees and reflecting the sunlight back from its windows in several little coruscations of glory.

Marilla hadn't ever stopped to consider colorless muslin as anything but ... colorless muslin. Assessing it afresh with Izzy made her understand how a homely thing can become quite extraordinary if given the chance to prove itself.
The smallest elements produced the most significant change. Salt in bread. Water in soil. Light in darkness. If she had been there, she could've saved her mother.
"...You can change your mind anytime you want, but you can't take words back. Not ever."
Money talk always felt like putting her hands in a bucket of tallow. No matter how many times she washed after, her fingers stayed too greasy to be comfortable.
The idea of bigotry based on color seemed foolish, laughable even, if it weren't so horrific. But people were killing and dying because if it. Red bled from all.
