Well-loved in our house, I hadn't realized that it was the second in a series when I applied to get it as an early reviewer. Our local library had the first book. Fast-paced and a good story, vocabulary and characters for this age of readers.

Despite not having read Book 1, it was pretty easy to catch up on the story and be pulled right in. This kid's book is very intense and fast paced, but entertaining for both adults and kids.

Jeff and Chipper are definitely an interesting duo, you never know what to expect from a 12 year old boy and a genetically engineered dog while on the run from The Institute! The people they meet do whatever they can to help, and are very creative in their own way (like when Emilie was kidnapped, she used her wits to keep her safe).

What happens when you team up a loyal and intelligent dog, with a headstrong and impulsive boy? It becomes quite the adventure from start to finish.

There really isn't too much character development, mostly just of Jeff and Chipper on the run and The Institute coming after them. There were some interesting and not so unexpected twists. Overall a decent and quick read. ( )

This is a straight continuation of Barclay’s first YA book, “Chase”. It picks up pretty much where “Chase” left off. I’ll just give the basics of what’s going on so as not to spoil the first book. Chipper is a dog that has been altered by “The Institute” – he is still part-dog, but also part-robot. He escapes and finds 12-year old, Jeff, whose parents passed away not long ago. The Institute is now looking for Chipper, and by extension, Jeff.

I really enjoyed these two books. They really are two parts to the same story, so I’ve rated them the same. It’s fast-paced, but it is meant for younger readers, so it is more simple than his adult books, but he still throws a couple of twists into the story, as well. ( )

With the main characters and story established fairly slowly over the first book, this was better than the first but not by a lot. Obviously this series isn't intended for my age range, but I won't be getting anymore of these books until I see if my nephew enjoys them when he is a couple years older. Maybe I'm way off base and kids love these books, stories seem less predictable when you haven't read nearly as much as adults have. ( )

This sequel was a great follow up to the first novel Chase in which a young boy named Jeff meets a hybrid half dog half robot named Chipper. Chaos ensues when the white coats at the institute try to track down chipper in order to keep what they have been working on out of the media and the publics eye. This is a great series for children as it is full of adventures and teaches about the love and bond of not only family but also animals and their owners as well. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes adventure especially young boys who are into robots, spies, and action. I think it is the perfect read for bedtime and would definitely pick this series up again! ( )
