She is worried about what rules there are in Coney Island and she misses her best friend. This is a good book to expose kids to a different culture with a simple story everyone can relate to. comparing beach experiences from a child's perspective Positive Comparative Cultures Review by Debra L Scott, 12/5/2018 Charming story of a young girl from Iran comparing a trip to the beach at the Caspian Sea with her first trip to an American beach in Brooklyn. Delightful illustrations echo a little of the style of traditional Persian artwork in the clouds, waves and scattered flowers. The contrast is clear between the two cultures, but young Rashin is happy in both. There is no discussion of religion or politics, which I was pleased to see. The cultures are different, and that’s okay. (Advanced Review Copy) Rashin is a little girl from Iran. She and her family moved to Brooklyn, New York and she is visiting the beach for the first time in America. Visits to the beach are something that Rashin is accustomed to in Iran. She enjoyed going swimming in Caspian Sea with her friend and the food her mom would packed for her. She wonders what Coney Island will be like and if it will be the same as her visits to Caspian Sea. Parts of Caspian beach had rules, men on one side and women on the other. She expected Coney Island would be the same. When she and her family got off the train heading to Coney Island, she didn’t know anyone but describe it as a fun chaos. Music, families of all colors and kids chasing each other. Her mom noticed the ice cream truck and Rashin was excited to get her favorite ice cream she usually gets in Iran, only to be sadden it wasn’t available. A kid nearby suggested chocolate and it turned out to be amazing. Rashin met new friends and enjoyed her first visit to a beach in America. The illustrations are filled with vibrant colors. I enjoyed reading this book. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

A lovely story about the difficulty of moving, adjusting to a new place and new rules, and making new friends.
Rashin is excited about her first trip to the beach from her new home - she and her family are going to Coney Island. The family moved from Iran, and used to take trips to the Caspian Sea. The story moves back and forth between the two types of trips, showing what's the same and what's different. At Coney Island, there is an ice cream seller, just like at the Caspian Sea - but they don't have Rashin's favorite flavor, saffron. This is too much, and she starts to cry. Another little girl in line suggests that Rashin try her favorite flavor, chocolate crunch...and it's good! The two play together on the beach, and Rashin asks her the rules for the beach before they play together. (
