One of mathman Stewart's less-challenging books, which somehow escaped my notice for nine years. I think I had already read most of the material earlier, though, since the chapters are basically reprints of Stewart's old _Scientific American_ columns.

An enjoyable maths book. The chapters are short and interesting. Sometimes you need to do a bit of thinking, but that's not a problem. The chapters I found the most interesting were the pair, one about building empires on the moon and the following one on how that seemingly abstract problem was useful when testing electronic circuits.

I once asked on Yahoo answers if there were any fields of maths that amateurs could tackle. The answer there was "probably not". However in this book there are examples of fields that haven't really been explored very much. (

Questo libro non contiene ricette di cucina, ma illustra come la nostra quotidianità sia leggibile a partire dalla matematica. Dopo aver letto queste pagine nessuno, guardando una tora, si limiterà a pensare: 'che bella torta'! Tutti penserete: 'ecco un bell'esempio di spazio di misura boreliano'!
