I’ve already read the Penguin collection of von Schönwerth’s fairytales, so the stories in this collection weren’t new by any means, but I had to pick it up because of the gorgeous illustrations. Willow Dawson did not disappoint, providing eerily lovely drawings alongside the small selection of stories from von Schönwerth’s archive. I’m sure she won’t be the last artist to officially illustrate his work, so I hope that this book sets a tone for future illustrators; just because many of the Grimm’s stories have been Disney-fied doesn’t mean that we have to start treating von Schönwerth the same way. Bring on the darkness that much folklore hides (or doesn’t in some cases) and give us something to really think about! ( ) I want more. Of the 500+ tales discovered by the researchers, this slim volume contains only 20-odd tales. A few are familiar, most are entirely new. All are told with a plain, matter-of-fact, straightforward narration that speaks right from the page, capturing the innate spoken essence. Not all of them make sense. But those that don't offer a fascinating insight into a culture not too distantly removed from our own. näyttää 3/3 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
"In the grand tradition of newly translated and illustrated collections of fairy tales, we present this collection of "lost" German fairy tales by Franz Xaver von Schonwerth, translated by Canadian Shelley Tanaka and illustrated by local artist Willow Dawson. From the Guardian, March 2012: "A whole new world of magic animals, brave young princes and evil witches has come to light with the discovery of 500 new fairytales, which were locked away in an archive in Regensburg, Germany for over 150 years. The tales are part of a collection of myths, legends and fairytales, gathered by the local historian Franz Xaver von Schonwerth (1810-1886) in the Bavarian region of Oberpfalz at about the same time as the Grimm brothers were collecting the fairytales that have since charmed adults and children around the world." Unlike his contemporaries, the Grimm Brothers, who edited and polished the tales they collected, von Schonwerth, a linguist, left his untouched. His books subsequently languished and were lost to time...until now."-- Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
