Jack Reardon, former SAS soldier and current Australian Meta-State asset, has seen some messy battles. But "messy" takes on a whole new meaning when he finds himself tied to a chair in a torture shack, his cover blown wide open, all thanks to notorious killer-for-hire Ethan Blade. Blade is everything Jack doesn't believe in: remorseless, detached, lawless. Yet, Jack's only chance to survive is to strike a bargain with the devil and join forces with Blade. As they trek across a hostile desert, Jack learns that Blade is much more than a dead-eyed killer - and harder to resist than he should be. A year later, Jack is home and finally getting his life on track. Then Ethan Blade reappears and throws it all into chaos once more. It's impossible to trust the assassin, especially when his presence casts doubts on Jack's loyalty to his country, but Jack cannot ignore what Blade's return means: the mess that brought them together is far from over, and Ethan might just bring back the piece of Jack's soul he thought he'd lost forever.… (lisätietoja)

There's a Romance discussion going on on Twitter after people were dismissive about tropes. Oh, sweet summer children... News flash: every story since stories were invented contains tropes - shorthand elements to cut explanations to a minimum. They're particularly useful in genre and sub-genre fiction. When you see the taciturn man with a badge and cowboy boots, leading a horse, you have a pretty good idea what to expect. That's a trope. Our minds love these mental shortcuts and love even more when they're tweaked or subverted, or pushed to 11 as King did with the super-fan trope in Misery.

Tropes are good. This book has many - but they're either tweaked or subverted, and the surprises are delightful surprises. I mean, come on. Our main character Jack is a super spy working for the Austrailasian super-state. He is in quite the pickle in the opening scene, a trope James Bond books and movies taught us. But the assassin is a surprise. And continues to be a surprise. For pretty much the entire book. What should have annoyed me but instead lent the story even more tension is the alternating 'then' and 'now' chapters. Even the last line's a nice 'oh yeah.' And I have to say, the sex scenes definitely kept pace with the level of the rest of the story. I wish all romance writers could manage that.

I loved this book. I want to see it in movie form. Animated would be fine. Someone get on that! ( )

This book surprised me in a very good way. From the first chapter, it was gritty, and packed with suspense and action. The dual timeline made sure I had no idea what was going to happen next, gradually revealing the pieces of the puzzle and keeping me on the edge of my seat. So, A for the plot.
Next, the characters. I liked Jack, but I think most readers will agree with me when I say that Ethan is the one who makes this book truly stand out. An assassin with hidden depths is always nice, but Ethan Blade is just something else. I was practically squealing with joy every time he appeared. That man is just so damn cute. Y'know, for an international assassin. And he has a freaking CAMEL, guys. Enough said.
The chemistry between the two MCs was off the charts, there was just the right amount of scorching-hot sex scenes... Damn, it's been a while since I've enjoyed a book so much. I'm off to read the rest of the series! ( )

Though not a bad read, the structure of this book started driving me nuts after a while, so I started skimming the "Then" chapters. Next time, if there is one, I will read the "Then" chapters first, then read the "Now" chapters. ( )

This is definitely a very hard book to rate. It’s an eclectic mix of fascinating characters, lots of lies and double crossing and fast paced action sequences. The story is told on dual timeline - present and an year ago - and I think it really worked. The stories mirror each other quite closely in both the timelines and it was very interesting to read, while also being frustrated because I couldn’t understand what the hell was going on and who was good and who was bad. The author keeps up the mystery for a long time and I found it very difficult to put the book down.

Jack is a great protagonist who has been through a lot in his career, still suffers from PTSD and has come to question what the point of all his life and work was. When there are traitors in his own office and his loyalty to his country is questioned while he doesn’t understand his own liking for a murderer, he doesn’t know who he is anymore and if he should be working as agent.

Ethan starts off as the deadly assassin but along with Jack, we start to realize he is much more than that. While being a ruthless cold blooded killer, he also has a childlike enthusiasm for his fast cars, is quite funny and his interactions with his pet camel were too cute. But you know what endeared me to him, he loves reading Matthew Reilly’s books and that immediately makes him my favorite 😊😊😊

I can’t even describe the way their relationship grows. It’s enemies to allies to lovers to enemies to whatever. The strong UST is very palpable but they also can’t get over their moral and professional differences but there is also an element of trust and this makes for a very interesting dynamic. I loved their interactions and how well they worked together when trying to save each other’s lives. The ending left me wanting more and I really want to read more of them.

If you love action / adventure / mystery novels with a dash of forbidden romance, you should definitely give this one a try. ( )

[3.5] IS IT BAD I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL ABOUT THIS BOOK

The one thing I know for sure is that assassin characters are hot af and I can't stop making heart eyes at Ethan Blade (Mr. #7 Most Notable Assassin in the World, how dreamy! ( )
