Fiction. Literature. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:Still stranded in 1815, FBI agent Kendra Donovan finds herself on the trail of a vicious murderer with a shocking secret.
October 1815: There is only one place Kendra Donovan wants to travel??back to her own time period in the twenty-first century. But since that's not happening, she agrees instead to travel with her new guardian, the Duke of Aldridge, to one of his smaller estates in Lancashire. Their journey takes them through Yorkshire, a region whose breathtaking beauty masks a simmering violence brought on by the Industrial Revolution, which pits mill owner against worker.

When Kendra and the Duke encounter a band of Luddites on a lonely, fog-shrouded road, the Duke informs the authorities in the nearby village of East Dingleford that mischief may have been done at the local mill. However, it isn't just mischief but murder that is discovered, when the body of the mill manager, Mr. Stone, is found brutally bludgeoned to death in his office.

The Constable is certain the radical-minded Luddites committed the murder. One look at the crime scene and Kendra knows they did not, prompting the Duke to shock the locals by volunteering their services to catch the real killer. Joined by lover Alec and Bow Street Runner Sam Kelly, Kendra must sort through the puzzle of Stone's rather unsavory life, picking apart alibies and dissecting carefully created deceptions from a growing list of suspects.

As a special agent for the FBI, Kendra thought she'd encountered every kind of evil. But when another, even more vicious murder rocks East Dingleford, Kendra realizes that they're dealing with a stone-cold killer??one who has a shocking secret that he will do anything to pr

Great premise and a really fun read. I need to go back and read the first two in the series. ( )

2019: Rogue FBI Agent Kendra Donovan being pursued by a killer, runs into the hidden stairway in the study of Aldridge Castle for safety; only to find upon emerging that she is now 200 years in the past. Eventually becoming the Duke of Aldridge's ward while helping to solve murders among the Beau Monde.

The Duke of Aldrige, Kendra, & their staff are on the way to one of his country estates (away from his sister) when out of the fog comes a group of Luddites, running from the textile mill they have just destroyed...

As the Duke & Kendra are invited to go to the mill, they discover the body of the mill manager with his head smashed in and a void where blood splatter should be. Days later the widow of the mill manager & her housekeeper are found with their throats slit, the widow being tortured as well & the house ransacked..

The local mill owner has eyes for Kendra but she dislikes how he makes her feel when he looks (leers) at her with his smarmy smile.

There is a great twist in the plot, which had me surprised....and led to a satisfying ending. ( )

I'm really enjoying this series. Historical fiction? Yes! Mystery/Thriller? Yes yes! And even time-travel? Oh yes.

This series is definitely a light read and I sometimes feel conflicted about giving "light reads" a high review as compared to other books that are heavier. BUT, I like to remind myself that I review based on the enjoyment I get from reading.

I thought the plot in Caught in Time was one of the more intricate as compared to her previous books and I was actually surprised at the outcome. I didn't guess some reveals and that always adds to my enjoyment of these types of novels.

My only nit-pick is I get kind of irritated at Kendra's (protagonist) inability to at least act the part of someone who'd live in the time. I feel like a prude when I say this, but she curses all the damn time (😏). It doesn't endear her to people in the time, nor does it fit a person of her new station. You'd think she'd learn to tone it down a notch even if she's not from the time period. But it's a minor complaint and I still enjoy her character. ( )

I'm not sure why I keep picking up these books. The mystery in this one was at least pretty good with an extra twist that I admit I didn't see coming, but I continue to be extremely bothered by Kendra. I just can't accept the position that she's fallen into, nor can I accept how everyone close to her continues to enable her to act in a manner that is completely out of place for the time. ( )

Since FBI Special Agent Kendra Donovan fell through the "wormhole" to Regency era England two months ago, she has thwarted a serial killer and identified the murderer of the former paramour of Alex, the Duke of Aldridge's nephew. In the third novel of this series, Kendra and the Duke's diversion to one of his smaller estates in Lancashire take him to Yorkshire, an area in England being changed by the Industrial Revolution. It is also a time when Luddites conspire to destroy the looms in local mills, the cause of so many workers becoming unemployed. Shortly after the Duke and his ward, Kendra arrives in the English village, the two are called to assist in the investigation of the mill manager, who has just been bludgeoned to death. Although the local marshal is convinced that the man's death is a result of Luddite violence, Kendra is not too sure.

As in the first two novels, Kendra investigations continue to be constrained by the gender roles for women of this time period even as she betters others involved in the investigation. She also is conflicted by her love for Alex and desire to be married and her desire to return to her own time. The author continues to add elements to each novel, which continue to make the series interesting. In this one, an event in her past prior to her time travel returns to haunt her. For those who are lovers of historical fiction, this series won't disappoint. Ms. McElwain continue to add elements of life in 1815 England to her stories, especially the difference between the aristocracy and commoners, which helps brings this period to life. If you haven't read the prior two, you can easily read this novel as a standalone, since the author interweaves the protagonist's history within this one. ( )
