Literary Merit: Good Characterization: Meh Reading Level: High School Recommend: No
In The Fall of Grace, a story of grief and overcoming hardship is told through Grace, a highschooler who has found out that her single mother has been operating a Ponzi scheme and has been found out. At the deliverance of the indictment, Grace's mother has a stroke and falls into a coma (a bit dramatic), maintaining any answers to the questions the FBI and Grace have about the alleged theft. Grace decides to take a trip to attempt to find answers on her own by visiting a scenic location across the country that her mother frequented.
Overall, I was disappointed in this work. I did not feel connected to Grace as a character and could not relate to her. The adventure, outdoorsy portion of the novel made sense in a way-- Grace needs to know that her mother loved her and goes on this grand trip to prove to herself that she is worthy of love. However, I felt that there were parts that were overly dramatic (random bear attack, Sam refusing to seek medical treatment after supposedly tearing ligaments in his ankle), and the whole reasoning for making the trip before pulling the plug on her mother didn't quite make sense. The ending was a flop for me. It felt formulaic and underwhelming. The story overall just felt boring and didn't really go anywhere. Her mother was a crook. Did Grace learn anything from it? No. There was intrigue in the possibility that money was stashed away somewhere, but there was no money to be found. This work is sorely lacking in depth and message. Not recommended. ( )
