Having just read Karen Memory #1, I was thrilled to find a new installment awaiting me. While I'm happy to have read it, I was rather disappointed that of all the wonderful characters from the first installment, only Karen and Priya are involved in this one. Don't get me wrong, I love Karen and Priya--their relationship gives me life--but I rather missed Madam Damnable, Miss Francina, and the others. What's more, the plot didn't do much for me personally. However, the writing is still good, and it's still the story of a queer couple in a steampunk Wild West, which I regard as pretty spectacular. ( ) Maybe it's been too long since I've read Karen Memory, or that first story was so much larger-than-life, that anything that wasn't as over-the-top was a let-down. It was nice to see Elizabeth and Priya again, and settling into domesticated life, and I hope that the author does revisit this world some more. But honestly, there are other characters from the first novel I would love to have more stories about rather than Elizabeth and Priya. An interesting enough tale, Karen and Priya tangle with an odd mix of spiritualists, illusionists, a supernatural problem, and their own definitions of themselves and their relationship. Much more cosy than I was expecting from my second encounter with Karen Memory. While the entities outside the relationship drive the action, and not always in the way I expected, they didn't seem very involving. The relationship stuff was well stated, but what resolution there was didn't quite hit the real bullseye. näyttää 4/4 ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

Readers met the irrepressible Karen Memory in Elizabeth Bear's 2015 novel KAREN MEMORY, and fell in love with her steampunk Victorian Pacific Northwest city, and her down-to-earth story-telling voice. Now Karen is back with a new story about spiritualists, magicians, con-men, and an angry lost tommy-knocker--a magical creature who generally lives in the deep gold mines of Alaska, but has been kidnapped and brought to Rapid City. Karen and Priya are out for a night on the town, celebrating the purchase of their own little ranch and Karen's retirement from the Hotel Ma Cherie, when they meet the Arcadia Sisters, spiritualists who unexpectedly stir up the tommy-knocker in the basement. The ensuing show could bring down the house, if Karen didn't rush in to rescue everyone she can. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
