Dropped near the end after the story managed to mess up every single plot point either with shallow platitudes or beaten clicheés.
This has all the bad characteristics of typical lazy YA apart from the main characters physical age. ( )

There is a plot line in this book that pissed me off so much that it caused me to wait a year between starting and finishing this book the first time. I only tried to re-read it because I thought a bit of time and perspective would make it better. It didn't.

Long story short, the heroine, Elisa, is hiding the fact that she has another "entity" inside her that apparently was bound to her during conception. You need to read the Chicagoland Vampires series final book to get the full details, but needless to say, Elisa has a "dark passenger" that she spends a lot of time and energy trying to keep at bay. All the while telling no one about it because of the fear she would "hurt and disappoint" them. Again, this is a very long story short, but this is the type of trope that pisses me off. It's almost up there with the TSTL characters. Why on earth does she feel so responsible for this magical entity that was created when her mother killed....never mind, long story. Anyhow, it boils down to the heroine going way out of her way to avoid telling others about the dangerous things about her for fear of them being emotionally hurt. Even though, they all would have excellent chances of ridding it from her. Nope. She's fine doing long meditations, and choking back feelings, and putting a continent of space between herself and her family. Don't want anyone to get "hurt".

That, and the love interest buildup is between her - a natural born vampire, and Connor, the son of the Shifter pack leader of Chicago. So, it's not something that I can see going anywhere. Really? A vampire and a shifter? Too much wrong there.

So, this is why I said "No thank you" to further books.

I read a short story about Connor and Elisa last year and thought I’d give the novels a try, since it was one of the better stories in the collection. I wasn’t super wowed with the plotline for book 1–and I think I missed out on a bunch of world building, not having read the main series featuring their parents—but I might eventually take the next one for a spin.
It follows the “supes are out” idea I remember first reading with the Sookie Stackhouse novels (but Patricia Briggs does it better) with various shapeshifters, vampires, and fae existing in the modern world and known to the human population. I don’t have super strong feelings for any of the characters, but I enjoyed the romantic scenes between Connor and Elisa, and I would like to know Petra and Theo, and some of the other supporting characters better. As a matter of personal taste, this title offends my sensibilities; it sounds like it should be on a bodice ripper (this is not a judgement of bodice rippers, merely a comment on the title's conflict with my personal tastes).

Moving on to more pertinent thoughts, this is a spin-off of the now-completed Chicagoland series, a series I loved dearly. I don't normally like spin-offs, because there just always seems to be that certain something missing. This wasn't an exception, although it is better than most. The original series had a spark of humor; a perfect narrative timing to the dialog, that Wild Hunger (Ugh) lacks. It's early days yet though.

The setting of this new series is approximately 25 years in the future, or, 25 years after the last book of the Chicagoland series. There are heavy references to the events in that last book, though I think everything is sufficiently explained that new readers won't be lost. A lot of the original characters are here too - Merit, Ethan and Gabriel are consistently present and cameos are made by several other characters, but the main focus is on Elisa, the first vampire child ever born, and Connor, the heir apparent of the local shifter pack.

It was a good story, consistently paced, fast moving and with just a touch of romantic tension. There are shades of the old witty banter that will hopefully blossom in future books as the author gets to know her new characters. I generally have a hard time reading when I'm on vacation, but this book kept me reading whenever I wasn't off doing something else. I'm not a morning reader at all, yet I found myself picking this up when I first woke up, to enjoy for an hour or so before starting my day.

I'll definitely be looking forward to the second book.

This was my pre-Halloween Bingo read, and I'm marking it for the Shifters square. ( )

Wild Hunger by Chloe Neill
Urban Fantasy - August 14th, 2018

Wild Hunger is the first in a new series that is a spin off from the author’s wildly popular Chicagoland Vampire series. Fun and instantly engaging, you won’t want this book to end.

It’s hard growing up as the only ‘born’ not ‘made’ vampire. As the daughter of the famous Master of Chicago and his sentinel, Elisa Sullivan has had big shoes to fill. So when she is old enough she decided to get training in France. Away from her parents and the expectations that surround her. In Europe, Elisa begins to find herself and a way to control the angry animal within her. One that lies just beyond the surface and loves violence. But when a world vampire peace conference is hosted in Chicago, Elisa finds herself back home with familiar and not so familiar faces. However, she isn’t even settled when a shifter friend named Riley is accused of murdering an important delegate! Elisa knows Riley isn’t capable of cold blooded murder even though all the clues point to his guilt. She is determined to find the real murderer and uncover a plot to disrupt the peace talks. That is if she can keep herself out of danger, too!

This hotly anticipated new novel is tons of fun. Wild Hunger will be a huge hit with fans of the Chicagoland Vampire series. It almost feels as if the reader has never left that world. We’re just starting a new and glorious adventure in it! Elisa is a different from her parents and I enjoyed seeing her parents through her point of view. Elisa is also a complex character. She is conflicted and feels a heavy burden to live up to her parents’ fame. The author has built an intriguing internal conflict that Elisa will be sure to need several books to investigate. As her unusual and dangerous powers seems to becoming a problem. Thankfully, her sexy friend Gabriel Keene is there to lend a helping hand and support her doubts. (I’m sure there will be more steamy scenes as the sexual attraction between the two of them is only in the early stages!) What I like most about this new series is that Elisa has already built a gang of friends -who know each other and will love and work together to fight for justice. Their comradery and repartee (teasing and joking) make a large part of this book so enjoyable. I can’t wait for more!!
