The illustrations in this book are large, detailed and colourful, and it includes many photographs of ancient Greek pottery, art and jewellery. The gods are cross-referenced in the pages, which is a nice added touch, and the way in which they are related to the various aspects of Greek home life is interesting. Unfortunately, the writing is not of very high quality, and the gods were only described in very vague detail. It also appeared that the order in which the gods appeared in the book was quite random; it was not alphabetic, by level of power, or by age. By providing only a brief insight into the role of the god or goddess, it was more difficult to relate to how they influenced the lives of ancient Greek men and women.
This book makes a nice introduction to the world of the Greek gods, but is in no way the best book I have seen on this subject. ( )
