; (en ligne), URL : https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/19152ac I loved the first part of this book - the setting of Toledo, Spain as the plague sweeps Europe and the Catholic church begins its Inquisitions is very atmospheric. I also liked the story of the stirrings of modern medicine in a very religious and superstitious time. There is a lot of violence but that seems indicative of life in those times. But Avram Halevi, the protagonist, never really comes to life for me. Sometimes he seems like a character out of Assassin's Creed, and other times his inability to love or commit to women or his religion is more like Hamlet. The author almost lost me about 3/4 of the way through the book - I think he just wrote pages, repeating himself a bit, until he figured out how to get Avram out of jail and how to end the book. The change of setting from the Mediterranean to Russia felt abrupt and I didn't travel well to that part of the story.
