Simple and powerful insights about the importance of sleep

I came to believe very strongly that use of sleep aids i.e, particularly medications was counterproductive. That is strongly supported by the findings discussed in this book. In addition there is a lot of insight about major social problems aggrevations by inadequate sleep: Alzheimer's, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, automobile accidents. The list is extensive. I worry a little that the author is a bit of a snake oil salesman, giving sleep way to much credit for what it offers our society.. But sometimes the best answers really are simple. He refers to a great deal of scientific evidence.
The author does provide encouraging examples of good results from improving sleep in select groups. If the epidemic of sleep deprivation is half as important as he makes it out to be then it is orders of magnitude more important than Covid for the world's health and well being. ( )

Interesting and thought provoking, though often rather dense, book about the importance of sleep to almost all aspects of physical and mental health and wellbeing. The average number of hours of nightly sleep people get in western industrialised societies has declined markedly over the last century or so. The author is a renowned sleep scientist and this is quite a science-heavy book, with many reports of clinical trials and other research. There are interesting facts about the relative importance of both non-REM (deep) sleep and REM (dreaming) sleep at different stages of life, and how both are vital to cognitive development and health in different ways. The author rues the fact that sleep is not given the same prominence in public health messaging and funding as drink or drugs, when, for example, accidents caused by drowsy drivers are more frequent than those caused by drunk drivers. He makes an excellent case, though I do slightly feel that he interprets every problem through the medium of sleep, in the same way that other writers see every problem as stemming from poor nutrition and/or lack of exercise. As a frequent poor sleeper myself, though, this was a useful read, with a summary of 12 very useful tips at the back of the book. Well worth a look, though most readers will probably not want to wade through all the detail. ( )

I fell asleep on my couch listening to this audiobook, which I actually think is a testament to how good the book was! ( )

I am much delayed in writing a review of this book. I've been "sleeping on it" for the last two weeks. Totally appropriate, I think. And there's lots and lots to why "sleeping on it" is a good thing in this book. In fact, there's lots and lots of benefit in this book to almost all average readers. For instance, like why it took me longer to read this book than normal because the author explained quite clearly -- while I was reading it -- why I shouldn't be reading an ebook late into the night, but should get a good night's sleep and help accomplish that task by not staring at an electronic device screen just before trying to accomplish it. Trust me. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Did you know a person would die from lack of sleep in just about the same amount of time they would die from lack of food? (And yet, American's generally eat too much and sleep too little. Go figure.) I am quite conscious of not wanting to sound too much like an evangelist on promoting this book, because it would be fairly easy for me to slip into that mode. Better I try to relate this to the best of clear, concise, entertaining access to the wonders of science, like oldsters may have gotten from Mr. Wizard, or younger folks may have enjoyed with Bill Nye, the Science Guy. Get yourselves a copy and start reading it. I will be very surprised if you won't quickly find information of benefit to you...and reasons to keep reading. ( )
