Having read it some time ago, I don't remember the details. But my sense is that, although a pleasant read, I had no interest in reading the rest of the series. ( )

This was a well-done police procedural in a series featuring Bruno Johnson, a detective with the Los Angeles Sheriffs' Department. Bruno is asked to go undercover on a narcotics team suspected of supplementing their income with murder-for-hire. But who can he trust? His boss, who gave him the assignment, but has a personal grudge against one of the suspects? Department leadership? Or Chelsea, an attractive female deputy who joins the team from Public Affairs, with no relevant background? Because all the characters are so flawed, I found the story a little depressing, but very realistic. The author's background in law enforcement was apparent; in places, the vocabulary was almost too technical.
Less believable was the home-life complication with the baby. At the beginning of the story, Bruno learns he is the father of a biracial child when an ex-girlfriend dumps their two-week-old daughter on his doorstep and leaves, never to be heard from again. He was very fortunate that his elderly father and a saintly neighbor were so willing to step up and provide round-the-clock care for the newborn while Bruno took care of police business.
The plot will keep the reader turning the pages. There's plenty of violence and twist after twist until the surprising end.
Disclosure: I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway, with no obligation to leave a positive review. ( )

I had a hard time connecting with these characters, it was a bit dry and drawn out for my taste. The story line took a long time to develop which made my mind wonder as the plot thickened. It might have been because this was the fourth book with is character. ( )

I'm sorry to say I had a very hard time getting into this book and I never connected with the characters. There were too many police terms that I didn't understand. I guess this is not my kind of book. ( )

I enjoyed the plot but it was a bit dry in my opinion. I may look for more Bruno Johnson books in the future. ( )
