I requested this collection of short stories by and about women and our issues because I like some of the contributing authors and because of the title and what was going on at the time. I really wanted to like it, though I expected to like some more than others, which is the way with collections like this. I got through the first five or six but just could not continue. The premise was good, but it seemed rushed and thrown together. I may go back and read more stories, but I'm in no hurry.Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. A book full of short stories written about women by women. Some were more enjoyable than others. There was a good variety of genres, so something for everyone. Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. The scope of the anthology was very interesting, I enjoyed many of the stories, and reread several. The variety of genres left me feeling unsettled at the end of the book. I would prefer an anthology that shares a common tempo along with a shared theme. I won this as part of the Early Reviewers program.I like the concept- 19 short stories of women who, literally, persisted through whatever they were handed. However, there were more stories I felt "meh" about than stories I absolutely loved. I liked the way the anthology was divided into past, present, and future. I can totally say I enjoyed the stories from the "past" the best. I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy so those didn't really appeal to me. They weren't bad- just not my jam. I requested a copy of this book for review, as I was really interested in the premise, but man I have (so far) just not been able to get into it. That's probably mostly my fault, as I'm just tackling the stories in order as presented, but they're organized more or less by genre (historical, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.) so that if one story doesn't grab you, the next might not be that big of a change in proverbial scenery.HOWEVER, having said all of that, the reason I'm writing this right now (when I'm far from finished with the book) is because I just finished reading Marissa Doyle's "Alea Iacta Est"—about a young woman in early-1800s London who takes the place of her injured brother playing tabletop war games at a gentleman's club—which was an absolute DELIGHT, and has totally rekindled my interest in this collection. I'm now looking forward to diving back in, and will update this later with a final, proper, review. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted." Those were the words of Mitch McConnell after he banned Senator Elizabeth Warren from speaking on the floor of the United States Senate. In reaction to the bitter partisanship in Trump's United States of America, nineteen Book View Cafe authors celebrate women who persist through tales of triumph--in the past, present, future, and other worlds. >From the halls of Ancient Greece to the vast space between stars, each story illustrates tenacity as women overcome challenges--from society, from beloved family and friends, and even from their own fears. These strong heroines explore the humor and tragedy of persistence in stories that range from romance to historical fiction, from fantasy to science fiction.>From tale to tale, every woman stands firm: a light against the darkness.Table of Contents:"Daughter of Necessity" by Marie Brennan"Sisters" by Leah Cutter"Unmasking the Ancient Light" by Deborah J.
