Caroline, a Virginia native has spent time with her relatives in Philadelphia. She soon realizes that owning slaves is moraly wrong. She goes back to Virginia and tries to persuade others to her new point of view. She meets Charles who does not see slaves as anything other than property. They dislike each other but are thrown together socially and soon they fall in love. Unfortunately, the war between the states prevents them from being married. Charles fights for the south and Caroline spies for the north. Charles is wounded and his father finds out about Caroline's double life. Charles cannot believe that Caroline was a spy but she tells him the truth. He tells her that he can't marry her. Caroline is devastated but devotes her life to teaching the freed negroes how to read and write. Josiah, a freed slave confronts Charles and Chat goes to see Caroline. They decide to pursue love. ( )
