It was interesting but wasn't really hooking me. That changed about 30-40% way through when I started thinking about it when not listening and listened whenever I could. All in all it was a really good book but may be a little hard to get into for some. 3.5 stars. The book alternates between two timelines - Kelly's life story and the story of the year in space. Maybe it was just because I listened to the audiobook version, late in the book when the author was discussing various space missions, I had a harder time keeping the timelines straight. Overall, this gave a pretty informative view of life on the international space station. Tämä arvostelu kirjoitettiin LibraryThingin Varhaisia arvostelijoita varten. A very informative and mostly entertaining autobiography, although the narrative starts to drag for the last hundred pages or so. Scott Kelly shares a great deal of his personal life in addition to detailing his exploits in space (mostly his time on the ISS where this book appears to have been written) and the training that brought him there. I received a free copy of this book for review from the publisher. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
The veteran of four space flights and the American record holder for consecutive days spent in space, Scott Kelly has experienced things very few have. Now, he takes us inside a sphere utterly inimical to human life. He describes navigating the extreme challenge of long-term spaceflight, both existential and banal: the devastating effects on the body; the isolation from everyone he loves and the comforts of Earth; the pressures of constant close cohabitation; the catastrophic risks of depressurization or colliding with space junk, and the still more haunting threat of being unable to help should tragedy strike at home--an agonizing situation Kelly faced when, on another mission, his twin brother's wife, Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while he still had two months in space. Kelly's humanity, compassion, humor, and passion resonate throughout, as he recalls his rough-and-tumble New Jersey childhood and the youthful inspiration that sparked his astounding career, and as he makes clear his belief that Mars will be the next, ultimately challenging step in American spaceflight. A natural storyteller and modern-day hero, Kelly has a message of hope for the future that will inspire for generations to come. Here, in his personal story, we see the triumph of the human imagination, the strength of the human will, and the boundless wonder of the galaxy. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

[Audiobook note: Kelly reads this himself. On the one hand, there's certainly something to be said for hearing an autobiography in the author's voice. But on the other hand, Kelly is not particularly expressive, delivering a rather monotone performance. Also, the sound quality is rather tinny.] ( )
