The twelve sermons of this collection are all organized around the idea that to be a Christian is to serve Christ. This is a somewhat mixed collection, i.e. that the quality of the message ranges from humdrum to outstanding. Among the former is a sermon from Dwight Moody. I have never read Moody before and what was distinctly lacking in this particular sample of his preaching was any kind of connection between the call to serve and the cross of Christ, leaving the message more as an example of Christian moralism than being a message that showed the glory of Christ.

There are some gems here, including one sermon from Charles Spurgeon and three from G. Campbell Morgan. The closing sermon, Morgan's Submission and Responsibility, is a masterwork, clearly showing the way his selected Scripture was understood in its context, then looking at Christ through the lens of that same Scripture before concluding with clear application to his congregation. And it is a sermon so lucid and relevant that, despite being written about 100 years ago it continues to speak clearly in our day. ( )
