I found the writing to be subtle and brutal. I love suspense and mystery and each story was carried forward with a great unknown that the reader is left to parse and puzzle and finally empathize over. Of course, it was wonderful to read stories that are not mapped out by heteronormative structures, social or otherwise. This was a good queer read. One of the earlier ones (I forget which) didn't do a whole lot for me and felt a little off in its execution, but otherwise, most of these really landed well for me. I especially liked "Difficult at Parties" and "Real Women Have Bodies, and I liked "The Resident" right up until its sudden weird end. "Especially Heinous" was both dark and funny (in its interplay with the dark repetition of the television program it parodies). This felt like a really strong collection to me, and Machado is an author to keep an eye out for.
