The premise is, yeah, a tad hard to suspend disbelief for, but not if you just go with the embedded metaphor. Too many people have tipped the Earth into disequilibrium: earthquakes, storms, disease, etc. but ALSO white people (and presumably pure blood Chinese, Africans and etc) no longer dream and descend into madness. The only 'cure' is using something found in the marrow of native americans, even half or quarter breed, and so the harvesting begins. The story focuses around a teen, Francis, Frenchie, who is on his own but does find a group to travel north with. North is where, hopefully, they can survive, stop the madness. Frenchie is a great character and so are the people in the group he lands in. Great story. Five stars for the couldn't put down factor.***** ( ) Audio fiction (kobo edition), 1st in series of 2 (7+ hrs), teen boy Frenchie and others navigate a post-apocalyptic world where the surviving population is affected by a madness/sickness that affects their ability to dream, and indigenous people are hunted relentlessly by those willing to murder for a cure with strong echoes back to the cultural genocide of the Indian school policies in the US and Canada; author belongs to Georgian Bay Métis (of Ontario) Nation. (CW/TW: violence, sexual violence, off-screen traumatic medical/educational institutions and worse) Audiobook narration (by Meegwun Fairbrother) is excellent, with awesome storytelling and even a little bit of singing/chanting included. The ending, I was crying, it was good. Thank you for a terrific story. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

"In a future world ravaged by global warming, people have lost the ability to dream, and the dreamlessness has led to widespread madness. The only people still able to dream are North America's indigenous population - and it is their marrow that holds the cure for the rest of the world. But getting the marrow - and dreams - means death for the unwilling donors. Driven to flight, a 15-year-old and his companions struggle for survival, attempt to reunite with loved ones, and take refuge from the "recruiters" who seek them out to bring them to the marrow-stealing 'factories.'"-- Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
