I was expecting an endearing story of adventures through the eyes of a cat. I was NOT expecting the gut punch of emotion in the last quarter of the book. The story revolves around a man who’s trying to re-home his cat because he’s ill and cats aren’t allowed in hospitals. So he travels all across Japan visiting close friends to see if his cat will get along with them. The cat, unwilling to leave his human, finds ways to sabotage his attempts until finally the man decides to keep the cat, and moves in with his aunt who helps to take care of the cat while he’s in hospital and after-the-fact. It’s a wonderful story of a man’s love for his cat, and the cat’s love for his human. Recommended, just make sure to have a box of tissues ready. A sweet and absolutely lovely journey through soft-edged adventures, friendships and connection, and memories, told largely from an excellently-done and clever feline perspective. The devotion shared by Nana and Satoru (and to some extent, all the people Satoru knew and had so many memories with) is presented with a beautifully understated yet strongly continuing thread. By the time I reached the ending I fully expected it to make me cry, and that it did, but it was beautifully done and the tears were sorrowful but not wrenching. What an absolutely delightful little book! This is the quirky story of Saturo, a young man in Japan who adopts a stray cat and names him Nana, meaning seven, based on the shape of his tale. Later in the story the two go on a road trip to find Nana a new owner because circumstances have changed for Saturo. The trip brings them across many of Saturo’s friends. They meet up with his friend Kosuke, whose wife has left him, and relive their childhood memories of raising another kitten, and Kosuke’s difficult relationship with his austere father. They visit the farmer Yoshimine, a pet-friendly B’n’B run by Sugi and Chikako, and spend time with the well-meaning but socially awkward Aunt Noriko. Nana does not seem to fit in at any of these places, but loves the road-trip, and is captivated by the grandeur of Mount Fuji and the warmth of an old fashioned tube television. The book is partly narrated by Nana with a wit and cynicism that sounds the way you would imagine a cat to think. It is a poignant but endearing read. 5 stars for me. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
