"Set on a postapocalyptic frontier, Blackwing is a gritty fantasy debut about a man's desperate battle to survive his own dark destiny... Hope, reason, humanity: the Misery breaks them all. Under its cracked and wailing sky, the Misery is a vast and blighted expanse, the arcane remnant of a devastating war with the immortals known as the Deep Kings. The war ended nearly a century ago, and the enemy is kept at bay only by the existence of the Engine, a terrible weapon that protects the Misery's border. Across the corrupted no-man's-land teeming with twisted magic and malevolent wraiths, the Deep Kings and their armies bide their time. Watching. Waiting. Bounty hunter Ryhalt Galharrow has breathed Misery dust for twenty bitter years. When he's ordered to locate a masked noblewoman at a frontier outpost, he finds himself caught in the middle of an attack by the Deep Kings, one that signifies they may no longer fear the Engine. Only a formidable show of power from the very woman he is seeking, Lady Ezabeth Tanza, repels the assault. Ezabeth is a shadow from Galharrow's grim past, and together they stumble onto a web of conspiracy that threatens to end the fragile peace the Engine has provided. Galharrow is not ready for the truth about the blood he's spilled or the gods he's supposed to serve… (lisätietoja)

My Thoughts:

Besides the profanity I mentioned in my previous Currently Reading & Quote post, McDonald also crossed one of the lines for what I'll not accept in my entertainment reading. As such, I am done with this book, this series and this author.

The cover blurb describes this as a mix of China Mieville and David Gemmell. Fast paced, not too complicated adventure/battle fantasy. I would say it leans more towards Gemmell than Mieville, it has some unique aspects but it just isn't funky enough for Mieville.

Ryhalt Galharrow is a Blackwing (the only one we meet in the book), a sort of special forces commander who is beholden only to Crowfoot, a super wizard guardian of The Range, the boundary lands holding back the undead drudge hordes of the Deep Kings. Captain Galharrow is a mercenary and bounty hunter most of the time, doing what he can to make a living, until after a 5 year absence, Crowfoot starts giving him orders again. Galharrow has skeletons in his closet but while rough around the edges, he's generally a good guy. Along with his team of Nenn and Tnota, he's sent to save an old acquaintance, Lady Tanza and off they go on a top secret mission.

Semi-dark but not too bad, there is a lot of action in this book and some good writing. A little over the top at times, but quite good. This book also pretty much stands on its own, while it is part of a series, it did not feel like I was missing something by not reading the next book, which I will do. ( )

**Blackwing** by *Ed McDonald* is classed as grimdark fantasy. I'm usually careful about those – much of the genre strikes me as ~edgy~ woe-is-me drivel that just delights in being as cynical as possible. Looking at the facts, Blackwing seems similar: middle-aged first-person character with a hard, depressing life, competent but always in difficulties, drinks too much, brutality all around, now the world (which is already pretty gruesome) seems to be ending. Add in higher beings using humans as playthings in their ineffable games, and … yeah.

But Blackwing works against this setting: The protagonist is a cynical hardass, but also unreliable, and still cares about humanity (and specific humans). Having positive motivations, and emotions, in a story like this made **all** the difference. It was a good read, and I'm looking forward to tackling the second volume (third one is scheduled to be published this summer). ( )

You want grimdark? You got it! In this debut novel, the first part of a trilogy (all of which has now been published), McDonald throws us deep into a frontier steampunk world struggling to defend itself against the forces of darkness. Our protagonist is Ryhalt Galharrow who, as far as most people know, makes his living seeking out those fugitives and thieves desperate enough to flee into the Misery – a blighted wasteland surrounding the city of Valengrad. But Ryhalt has another set of obligations. He bears a tattoo of a black bird, marking him out as Blackwing: sworn to the service of Crowfoot, one of the Nameless (ancient sorcerers whose great power was once all that stood between the Republic and the Deep Kings). But the Nameless’s power is fading and the drudge, the Deep Kings’ undead armies, are growing stronger. All is not well: Ryhalt doesn’t need a tattoo to tell him that. But it isn’t until his past returns to haunt him, in the person of the irritating scholar Ezabeth Tanza, that Ryhalt realises exactly how wrong things are...

This was a really enjoyable book. Congrats to Ed McDonald on a great debut; I enjoyed the bleak world and the bleak outlook of it all. Nothing like a hopeless struggle against the odds for the mortals being stamped on by the gods above. There was enough mystery on the Nameless and the Deep Kings to make them fascinating, and the drip of information kept my interest. Looking forward to learning more about the fantastical elements of this world. ( )
