C Primer Plus is a conversational-style book aimed at those new to C programming. A friendly and easy-to-use self-study guide, this book will be appropriate for serious students of programming, as well as developers proficient in other languages with a desire to better understand the fundamentals of this core language. As with all the editions, author Stephen Prata's aim has been to create an introduction to C that is instructive, clear, and helpful. Programming concepts are explained along with details of the C language; the book does not assume that you are a professional programmer. Many short, easily typed examples illustrate just one or two concepts at a time, since learning by doing is one of the most effective ways to master new information. Finally, review questions and programming exercises at the end of each chapter punctuate the most critical information and help readers digest the most difficult concepts. The text has been updated to accommodate the emergence of a new standard for C-C99.… (lisätietoja)

Chapter 1 -- Getting Started -- Welcome to C++! This exciting language, blending the C language with support for object-oriented programming, has become one of the most important programming languages of the 1990s and promises to continue strongly into the 2000s. Its C ancestry brings to C++ the tradition of an efficient , compact, fast, and portable language. Its object- oriented heritage brings C++ a fresh programming methodology designed to cope with escalating complexity of modern programming tasks. Its newly enhanced template features bring yet another new programming methodology, generic programming. This triple heritage is both a blessing and a bane. It makes the language very powerful, but it also means there's more to learn.

What Now? -- Now that you have worked your way through this book, you should have a good grasp of the rules of C++. However, that's just the beginning in learning this language. The second stage is learning to use the language effectively, and that is the longer journey. The best situation to be in is a work of learning environment that brings you into contact with good C++ code and programmers. Also, now that you know C++, you can read books that concentrate on more advanced topics and upon object-oriented programming.
