It was a short one and I can see why. In many ways I had the sense that there was some filler in places waiting for the big ending to happen. The books in this series reference many sci-fi tropes along the way and that is not necessarily bad. However because of the tropes the main resolution was easily predictable and something I expected since book 2. Even the superiority that the Bob's felt over the ephemeral was getting old. I did enjoy the read but it did not wow me and I was looking forward to the end. Because of all this I see it only as a 3 star book regardless of the popularity. ** Potential Spoiler ** One annoying thing and something I consider a missed opportunity concerns the replication/transformation from human to machine entity. I find it extremely hard to believe that in all the time that the story takes place not one person wanted to make the leap from being biological to machine entity, not one. Given the upsides (basically eternal, see the universe, replicant bodies available, etc.) of it with little downside it is unbelievable that no one wanted to enter that world when they died or maybe even wanting to switch while living. It is basically a Bob only club. I also found the conclusion weak. But as they say, YMMV I'm rating this as the whole series, not just this last part, and rounding 4.5 stars up to 5 because it's a relatively unknown series. As I said, it's written in the style of The Martian; there are a series of adventures and problems to solve, some of which lasted a while and some that were solved fairly quickly, although most seemed to have some gotcha about the time they were almost solved. The characters were interesting, especially the Bobs. I think there were 500 Bobs by the end, and it made it a little confusing, but not really too bad because the context seemed to be more important than which actual Bob it was, and it wasn't hard to keep up when it was important. The book had a bit of everything - science, humor, philosophy, even romance, which is unusual considering the Bobs are basically computers. But they have a lot of human characteristics, which comes as a surprise even to themselves at times. Also, their thoughts and emotions often come as a surprise to them, as well. The author has shown himself to be one to watch out for, and I'll definitely pay attention to any of his other books that are out now or in the future. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

"Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct. But political squabbles have a bad habit of dying hard, and the Brazilian probes are still trying to take out the competition. And the Bobs have picked a fight with an older, more powerful species with a large appetite and a short temper. Still stinging from getting their collective butts kicked in their first encounter with the Others, the Bobs now face the prospect of a decisive final battle to defend Earth and its colonies. But the Bobs are less disciplined than a herd of cats, and some of the younger copies are more concerned with their own local problems than defeating the Others. Yet salvation may come from an unlikely source. A couple of eighth-generation Bobs have found something out in deep space. All it will take to save the Earth and perhaps all of humanity is for them to get it to Sol - unless the Others arrive first."--Goodreads. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

While this book was a fine, clean ending to the series, it did not live up to its predecessors. ( )
