"Of #1 New York Times-bestselling author Sue Grafton, NPR's Maureen Corrigan said, "Makes me wish there were more than 26 letters." With only one letter left, Grafton's many devoted readers will share that sentiment. The darkest and most disturbing case report from the files of Kinsey Millhone, Y is for Yesterday begins in 1979, when four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate--and film the attack. Not long after, the tape goes missing and the suspected thief, a fellow classmate, is murdered. In the investigation that follows, one boy turns state's evidence and two of his peers are convicted. But the ringleader escapes without a trace. Now, it's 1989 and one of the perpetrators, Fritz McCabe, has been released from prison. Moody, unrepentant, and angry, he is a virtual prisoner of his ever-watchful parents--until a copy of the missing tape arrives with a ransom demand. That's when the McCabes call Kinsey Millhone for help. As she is drawn into their family drama, she keeps a watchful eye on Fritz. But he's not the only one being haunted by the past. A vicious sociopath with a grudge against Millhone may be leaving traces of himself for her to find"--… (lisätietoja)

I have now read all of the books in this series. The first few up until G or so were really good and then it seemed to go downhill from there. I suspect that Sue may have already been dying from cancer when she was writing this book, so I could give her some slack there. This book would have been better if it had been edited down. It was too long and a lot of details that didn't add to the story. I hated the group of kids that were involved throughout in this story. A bunch of little jerks. ( )

Disappointing to end the series before it's natural conclusion on what turned out to be one of the weakest books. Grafton has turned away from the direct writing style to interspersing chapters from the suspects, and then throwing some time jumps into the mix well. It doesn't help, and is at times actively confusing. I think in part it's because there's little cause for Kinsey to deduce the actual motivations. It's also all a little sordid, there' s a particularly unpleasant video tape involved, and the whole thing just doesn't really fit the normal things that Kinsey gets involved with. Additionally the local drama scene is every more complicated and it's not at all clear who she'd intended to wrap the storyline up in just one more book.

Henry's a sucker for yet one more good-luck story this time from a homeless woman and her current paramour. And his some-what tame dog 'killer'. Kinsey is not so charitable. Meanwhile the local scene is amused by the ongoing Cheeny/Jonah/ann/kinsey possibilities. It's a lot to close -out in one more book, and although Kinsey did inhert sufficient capital a couple of books back she doesn't seem to be inclined to lay down her career anytime soon. Even the re-appearance of bogey -man Ned from the last story doesn't get her down. In some respects the school-age drama is second fiddle to all this domestic goings-on. Kinsey drives around a lto and talks to the various participants who routinely lie to her and uphold their version on events from 10 years ago. She know's something is fishy but is making little headway in determining what it was. A few more bodies than usual and it's all resolved.

RIP MS Grafton, your tales brought joy to a huge audience, and I'm sure you'll be the first to admit they weren't high literature but they substantially better than most of the genre, Kinsey is one of the first kick-ass female detectives long before Laura Croft was even thought of, and for those of us who grew up before computers and mobiles were commonplace she'll always have a special place in our hearts. I hadn't listened to any of the Kinsey Millhone mysteries before, but I thought I'd try this one. Judy Kaye does a wonderful job of voicing Kinsey and all the other characters in the story.

I notice different things when I listen. Grafton puts in a LOT of description, more than I realized, some of it valuable, some not. Actions are described in step-by-step detail, homes are described by style and content. Did she do this in the earlier books? I can't recall.

The story is OK, but I was frustrated being constantly ahead of her. It's like someone screaming 'Lock the door' in a scary movie because the heroine is so careless. Kinsey puts many of the pieces together late, and Grafton pulls some punches to create what I must admit is a scary and funny denouement.

This is the last in the alphabet series. Grafton didn't quite make it to Z, unless her publisher has a last manuscript. It's been a fine ride. ( )

Another good Kinsey mystery. Lots of loose ends tied up. Sad to think this is almost the end. Although couldn't "Z is for Zero" open up a "number" possibility?! 🤔 ( )

Disappointed. Have read all the alphabet books and loved them, but this one was was difficult to get through. Pick it up, put it down. Also too many errors that should have been caught by a good editor. Kinsey just wasn't Kinsey in this book. ( )
