"Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself... Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds, revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love, Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways."--… (lisätietoja)

Monique Grant, a writer at Vivant Magazine, is tapped by movie star Evelyn Hugo to write about Evelyn. Monique's editor sees this as a coup for the magazine, but can't understand why Evelyn chose Monique, vs. a more established writer. Evelyn is firm--it's Monique or no one.
When Monique meets Evelyn, and Evelyn begins her story, Monique realizes that this is more than an article, Evelyn wants Monique to write her biography.
Evelyn tells her life story, her drive to overcome her poor beginnings and to become a wealthy and famous actress. She also tells Monique the story of her marriages--all of them, as well as her friendships with other Hollywood elite, including the Oscar winning Celia St. James.
Finally, she tells Monique the reason that Monique was given the story.
Evelyn tells Monique the truth about her life.
I loved this book, I got so caught up in Evelyn's story. Full of love and heartbreak, this story will stay with me. ( )

Holy cow!!! That was incredible. I have just spent the last 12 hours reading this book. I literally could not put it down. As others have said, this turned out to be so much better than I was expecting.

Actually this turned out to be a social commentary on the LGBTQ community in Hollywood from the 1950s through the 1980s.

As for the relationships that Evelyn had, some of them were horrible, and others were wonderful. It was basically a case of her being bisexual at the wrong time, in the wrong place.

It was also an extremely interesting novel, in that it portrayed what life was like in Hollywood for the LGBTQ community - most of whom were forced to hide their sexuality.

Added to all this would also have been the McCarthy anti-communism hysteria during the 1950s as well. But there was no mention of McCarthyism or communism at all. Mind you - IF Evelyn moved to Hollywood in 1955, it is possible that the anti-communist hysteria may have died down by then.

And in the 1980s when the AIDS virus emerged, it was first found in Gay men. Which stirred everything up against that community again.

I have read several memoirs about actors from the 1960s.

One of my favourite memoirs was one penned by George Takei from the Star Trek TV series. He had to deal with discrimination twice over. Once for being Japanese and again for being Gay. I don't blame him for not saying anything in his memoir about the Gay lifestyle in the 1960s. He did not come out as being gay until 2005 - more than 30 years after Star Trek ended.

I think this novel now fills in the gaps for me, regarding what George Takei's life might have been like during that time.

As for the AIDS virus, there was one comment in this novel about AIDS which I thought was rather telling. This comment would have been spoken in the 1980s after the AIDS virus was discovered. Did you see what they did to Rock Hudson? If it was cancer he was dying of, there would be telethons.

I give this novel 5 stars. When I cannot put a story down and I end up finishing a novel on the same day I started it, then it deserves 5 stars!! ( )

This book was a surprise to me - certainly not what I expected! Riveting and compelling, it was a fast read despite its nearly 400 pages. I’m not one to read much about real Hollywood stars, so I wasn’t expecting to like this one as much as I did. And enjoy it, I did. Though Evelyn was not a truly likable character, she did not delude herself that she was. She knew exactly how ruthless she was, and she owned it! Though she might have promoted herself and her career over others, she nevertheless looked out for those she loved. And love she did! In spades. The story of Evelyn’s life is well told through the framework of her seven marriages. To say there are surprises along the way is putting it mildly, and the biggest surprise is revealed at the end. You might not like Evelyn, and you might not want someone like her for a friend, but she is like a catastrophe you can’t ignore. You can’t stop reading about her, and you can’t quite believe it all, even as she is saying it. Author Taylor Jenkins Reid certainly has a deft hand for writing. The characters are real and well developed. The plot is thoughtfully constructed and imaginative. The whole is really greater than its parts. Evelyn does impart a few life lessons along the way. Though she starts out wanting more wealth with each success, eventually she comes to realize that what is important is family. This is not a book everyone will love, but those who read it will take something away from it, an enlightenment in some way or other, to broaden their thinking. It may not enrich lives, but this tale is undoubtedly entertaining, just like Hollywood stars should be. ( )

More like 4.5 stars. Great inventive story very interesting twist in the end. I found this book in my archives and figured I would read it instead of Malibu Rising. So glad I did! ( )
