Not my usual read, but if approached with a clear and open mind, be prepared to be pulled into the story. Mr. Waller's ability to take the reader through a story we have since we were raised watching classic movies, his prose provides a new account, and our memories add traditional mental images from our youthful experience. Had seen the movie years ago after not thinking I would want to but really enjoyed it. When I saw this book for sale at Mercy for $.50 how could I pass it up? I did enjoy the book but can't compare to the movie as I don't remember the details of it very well. I did cry during both and would definitely recommend this book. I think many of us can relate to Francesca. We love our families- kids and spouses- but things don't always turn out the way we dream they will. Doesn't mean it is bad just not great all the time. ( )
Looking at other people's reviews of it this seems to be a polarising book, as is often the case with works that become a "must read" as this did. I read it because it was a favourite book of a friend who passed away a while ago, and I'm glad I did. I felt it went on too long, that the final 2 chapters tipped it over the edge into the "laying it on really thick" zone, but until then I found it moving, romantic and readable. It's full of clichés and sentimentality, but it works. ( )
