This is a cute story but the subtly hilarious illustrations are what make it genius. Check out the last pages, where there's a list of items to bring on a sleepover, and squee over the drawings accompanying "Woolly socks" and "Friend."

I am indifferent about the book Hugless Douglas and the Big Sleepover by David Melling. One of the things that I enjoy most about this book is that David Melling is both the author and illustrator. So the illustrations compliment the text perfectly. However I did not enjoy the book being written from the third person point of view. I think if the author had switched to the first person point of view we would have been able to understand Douglas’s emotions and thoughts a lot more in depth. The plot is also very choppy and never really gained any sort of smoothness. The book also lacked a message or a big idea. But there was nothing that made me think that this is terrible. ( )
