Five Minutes Longer by Victoria Sue

Enhanced book 1. M-M paranormal romantic suspense. The human population has taken the next genetic step in advancement. Special abilities manifest in children as young as eight years old. Their abilities come with a toll in a marking on the face that cannot be covered or removed.
A new FBI task force is made up of the genetically advanced but most of the population either fears or doesn’t trust the enhanced. The team has a lot of prejudice to overcome.

Reminds me a bit of Paige Tyler’s SWAT series, or Charlie Cochet’s Thirds series in terms of the team and the building comradely.

An action fill adventure with great suspense and one tortured and heroic character that keeps getting knocked down. You can’t help rooting for him to win in the end.
I will definitely read more of this series to see if this FBI team can convince the public they truly are heroes that can be counted on to win the day. ( )

Many have pointed out the similarities between the first book in the THIRDS series and this one and I can see why.
They certainly have a similar structure, with superhumans instead of shifters and the newcome “normal” human forced on a reluctant team by their superior. There’s also the background of prejudices and hostility of the general population toward the enhanced and the team leader falling for his new regular partner despite his initial decision to make the partnership fail.
So, yeah, pretty similar, but it didn’t feel like I was reading the exact same book.

Finn is very different from Dex, and I liked him better. He’s quiet, a little awkward and he had to work around his dyslexia all by himself to get through school and realize his dream of joining the FBI, with very little support from his family.
He’s strong and I liked that. I’d have liked it better if he’d applied some of that strength to his relationship with Talon, because Finn has the annoying tendency to become kind of a doormat when it comes to his partner and to just accept Talon’s continuous going back and forth.
It was a good thing that Gael, one of their teammates, didn’t have any problem calling Talon an idiot any time it was necessary.

I hope Finn and Talon’s relationship will be better developed in the second book, because in this one it’s pretty much all insta-love, Talon’s trying to stay away and hurting Finn in the process and Finn forgiving him.
And I really, really hope Talon stops calling Finn “kid”. I get that he looks young and the team calls him that, but it’s creepy when Talon does it. Who calls “kid” someone they’re having sex with?

So, the plot wasn’t particularly original and the writing nothing special, but the story was overall entertaining enough.

I’m pretty annoyed by a couple of editing oversights, though.
In one case Finn and Talon are talking in the living room, with Finn clearly placed on the sofa, and in the middle of their conversation they’re suddenly in the bedroom, with Finn on the bed under the blankets.
The other one was so glaringly obvious, I’m still wondering how it could’ve been missed.
At the beginning of the book Finn takes Talon home and stays there overnight, in the guest bedroom.
In the middle of the book Talon takes an almost unconscious Finn home with him because he has to watch over him after a concussion and he can’t take Finn to Finn’s apartment because he (Talon) has a dog to take care of. While Talon’s helping him from the car to his place, Finn thinks to himself that Talon’s taking an elevator, thus he must live in an apartment, then Talon tells Finn that they’re at his place and that he has a dog.
But Finn should’ve recognized the place, since he’d already been in Talon’s apartment, and the first time he was there there was no dog and no mention of her either.
I think one of the major publisher in the genre should be able to release a book with better editing than this. ( )
