Bailey King is a NYC chocolatier about to be promoted in a prestigious chocolate shop. Her grandmother in Ohio calls Bailey to come at once as grandfather's heart is failing and he is in the hospital. What Bailey has told no one, not even her best friend Cass, is that her grandparents are Amish. Bailey rushes to her grandparents' home above their Swissman Sweets candy shop. A land developer is buying up all the local Amish businesses, and is pressuring Bailey's grandparents to sell out, too. Her first night at her grandparents, Bailey goes downstairs after everyone is asleep, to get her phone which she left charging down in the candy kitchen (the only place where electricity was allowed.) She can't open the kitchen door, due to something partially blocking the door. A dead man was in her grandparents' candy kitchen. The first half the book was rather slow moving as the author introduces the reader to the small Amish/English community of Harvest, Ohio. There are many quirky Amish and English characters to become acquainted with. This is a decent introduction to a series. ( )

Bailey goes to visit her grandparents when she learns that her grandfather's health is failing. While there she learns of much she did not know about them. She also discovers the body of a man who wants to buy her grandparent's candy shop. With the whole family under suspicion of murder, she needs to find out who did it before one of them ends in prison.

I enjoyed this book. It sets up the series well. I liked Bailey. She puts her life on hold while helping out her grandparents. I liked that being with them in the Amish community brings her to question her choices in her English life. The story was good. I did not figure out the murderer until it was explained in the end.

I look forward to the rest of the series. ( )

It took me a while to warm to the town. The clear dislike of the Amish as shown by the Sheriff was very hard to take when you realize he's nearly all the protection that they have in an area where harassing them is so common. I enjoyed the grandparents, especially the grandfather who was a sweetie. The mystery itself was well concealed making it more enjoyable. I look forward to the next in the series. ( )

Bailey King lives in New York City, working as assistant chocolatier at JP Chocolates. She learned to love chocolate and making candy from her Amish grandfather. When she receives a phone call that her grandfather is very ill, she drops everything and rushes to Ohio. When she arrives, she discovers her Daadi is not only having health problems but he's also being pressured to sell his candy shop to a local developer, Tyson Colton. Several other Amish business owners have been pressured by Colton as well. Bailey is so upset that night she can't sleep. She wanders down to the candy shop from her grandparents upstairs living quarters, only to discover something horrific -- Tyson Colton's dead body bleeding all over the store's kitchen floor. Immediately Bailey finds herself the main suspect in the murder. How can she prove her innocence, make candies for a local wedding, and make it back to NYC in time to find out about an important job promotion?

I loved this book! It is hands-down the best cozy I've read in a long time! The setting and characters are interesting and engaging (except for one annoying woman I wanted to throttle....but I was supposed to hate her. ha ha). The mystery was well-paced, exciting and had plenty of suspects and surprises. I was reading an advanced readers copy on my phone.....I stayed up til 2 am to finish it, reading in bed. I felt like a kid again reading under my covers with a flashlight. :)

I am not surprised at all that I loved this book. Amanda Flower never disappoints me. I enjoy her Magical Bookshop series too! She also writes the Living History Museum mystery series and the India Hayes series. Assaulted Caramel is the first book in the new Amish Candy Shop cozy series. A second book in this series, Lethal Licorice, will be coming out in February 2018. For more information on the author and her books: check out her website at http://www.amandaflower.com/

**I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book from Kensington via NetGalley. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.** ( )

After hearing many great things about Amanda Flower's Amish Candy Shop Mystery series, I decided to give Assaulted Caramel a try as it was on Chirp Books for a reasonable price.

I found myself underwhelmed by the book.

First off, the narrator. The narrator sounded like Alexa (or another generated voice) read the whole book; I mean, it was bearable once I got used to it, but just barely. If I am honest, I almost gave up a few times before pushing through.

As for the characters, as a reader, they all felt rather shallow and one-dimensional, which was kind of boring. Also, I noticed that the characters (the main character especially) made all kinds of dumb leaps and assumptions about the investigation and others, which was kind of annoying.

It is not all bad, though, when it comes to Assaulted Caramel's mystery, I will admit that I did not guess the killer until the reveal (although I still don't particularly understand the motivation or the 'how?' of the murder.)

Overall, this book was only 'okay,' I found the characters slightly annoying, and the narrator to be terrible, but the mystery genuinely kept me going until the end.

I am unsure if I will continue with the series. ( )
