true story of the Tennessee Children's Home Society, and its owner Georgia Tann, whose greed led her to take children (even babies) from unwitting or indigent families and sell them to the rich and powerful, housing them in deplorable orphanages. The story involves five children, living on a riverboat, who are kidnapped when their parents have to go to the hospital for a difficult birth. The five children are abused in many ways and divided. "In this poignant novel, inspired by a true story, two families, generations apart, are forever changed by a heartbreaking injustice"

The story of Rill Foss and her siblings begins in 1939; The story of Avery Stafford in the present day. Two families linked by an unthinkable crime.

I was really looking forward to reading this book and was disappointed how long it took for me to latch on to it. As the author jumped between the time periods I sometimes felt that 2 different people were writing the chapters. The story of the orphans kept me riveted, while for me, Avery's side of things fell short. Thus my mediocre rating of 3 stars.

I would like to know more about Georgia Tann and the actual events that took place, will probably search for some other books on the subject. If anyone knows of one or two let me know!

3.75 stars

In the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, the Tennessee Children’s Home Society was seen as a positive thing for adopting out poor orphans to wealthy families. It was only discovered in 1950 that many of those kids had families who wanted them. Many of those kids were kidnapped and kept in orphanages, abused, and finally sold.

This fictional account follows 12-year old Rill and her four siblings who were taken off their parents’ boat to live in an orphanage, then to be adopted out. There is also a present day story where Avery is trying to figure out something her grandmother Judy didn’t want anyone to know, as a stranger has a letter for Grandma Judy, but the letter isn’t allowed into anyone else’s hands except Judy, whose mind is no longer well.

I listened to the audio and I thought it started off pretty slow, so it took me a bit to get “into” it, and I might have missed a few things at the start (that may or may not answer a question I had near the end). It did pick up, though, and I found myself more engaged. I actually ended with a couple of questions, though; I have a guess as to the answer to one of them, but if it was outwardly answered, unfortunately, I missed that, too. My questions and the slow start are why I couldn’t bring my rating up to 4 stars, but the bulk of the book was engrossing enough that it almost could have been there. I was glad there was an author’s note at the end with more of the true story of the Home Society. ( )

This novel is based on the true story of the Tennessee Children's Home Society, and its owner Georgia Tann, whose greed led her to take children (even babies) from unwitting or indigent families and sell them to the rich and powerful, housing them in deplorable orphanages. The story involves five children, living on a riverboat, who are kidnapped when their parents have to go to the hospital for a difficult birth. The five children are abused in many ways and divided. The parallel story is a modern one involving an ailing Senator, a possible scandal regarding elder care, and family secrets. The modern story was not compelling at all, especially the lead character, Avery. The ending was sweet though. Read Where the Crawdads Sing, which is much better. ( )

It's funny how what you're used to seems like it's right even if it's bad.
Life is not unlike cinema.  Each scene has its own music, and the music is created for the scene, woven to it in ways we do not understand.  No matter how much we love the melody of a bygone day or imagine the song of a future one, we must dance within the music of today, or we will always be out of step, stumbling around in something that doesn't suit the moment.
I have to be close to my sister, We've been stitched together at the heart since she was born.
In my multifold years of life, I have learned that most people get along as best as they can. They don't intend to hurt anyone. It is merely a terrible by-product of surviving.
The names of old friends and acquaintances she can often recall with ease. It's as if her memory book has fallen open, a persistent wind tearing out the most recent pages first. The older the memories are, the more likely they are to remain intact.
