I experienced these exact feelings about books, even many of these books she's mentioning. Yet I wasn't really engaged. So I read the epilogue thinking I would take a pass. Huh, maybe I will keep going. So I did. but I think the first two chapters were the only two where I coincided with the author. after that she lived in Paris, backpacked in Asia, got herself into crazy situations. Lived in London, read books I have never heard of, let alone read. Her career progressed and suddenly she is saying "I am the book editor at NYT" so often she sounds like she is bragging. maybe she can't believe it herself, but then she goes on to talk about her amazing brushes with famous people and her awesome life and it is less about the specific books and just about a life in which books are central. That is true for me, but true in such a different way that I stopped relating. I stopped caring. It is an ok a book but hardly great. Dear Fahrenheit 451 was so much better. More jazz, more energy, more relatable. Take a pass on BOB and read that one instead. (  ) LDVoorberg | Nov 22, 2020 | Kudos to Paul for her devotion to Bob, its a wonderful thing to have and the appeal is undeniable. The memoir itself, however, left me out in the cold. The stories of her life I either couldn't sympathize with or were so glossed over they didn't leave much impression. She has a magnificent education, lives abroad, has ups and downs in her love-life, and succeeds in her career. She rarely convinced me of the connections between the books she was reading and those times in her life. ( ) ManWithAnAgenda | Feb 18, 2019 | I thought I would like this book better. I've been keeping a journal of everything I've read (outside of LibraryThing) since 1996. I also include a little review there. But I found some of the chapters very slow going and not interesting. The author writes wittily about her adventures with Bob (her Book of Books), a journal listing all the books (by author and title) she has read since high school. Each chapter reflects on her reading at the various stages of her life -- time in Paris, time in Thailand, the difficulties of her first marriage, the birth and growth of her children, etc. She maintains a light touch throughout, even in the more difficult challenges she has had to face. -- It is probably not her fault that my interest began to flag toward the end (perhaps I was too eager to move onto The Next Book? ← a preoccupation I suspect Ms. Paul would understand all-too-well and with which she might even be able to muster some sympathy!). Pamela, if you're reading this, don't be alarmed. The bookish content you create just speaks to me on a very personal level.
Since her early twenties, Pamela has kept a Book of Books (Bob) - a notebook filled with every book she has read over the last ~30 years. It's like Goodreads, but more romantic. "My Life with Bob" is a memoir of Pamela's reading life, and the notebook that's traveled with her through challenges, promotions, and creating and losing family. Not only is she a great book reviewer, but a great writer, too. (
