"It was just supposed to be a routine exam. But when the doctors snake the fiber-optic tube down Robert Smith's throat, what they discover doesn't make medical sense. Plastic casings. Silver filaments. Moving metal parts. In his naked, anesthetized state on the operating table, Robert hears the surgeons' shocked comments: 'What the hell is that?' 'It's me,' Robert thinks, 'and I've got to get out of here.' Armed with a stolen automatic and the videotape of his strange organs, he manages to escape, and to embark on an orphan's violent odyssey to find out exactly who--exactly what--he is"--Book description.… (lisätietoja)

This is a very awesome book. It reminds me of going to the doctor, when I was a kid. I always hoped that I was some sort of alien. That they would poke a needle in me and some weird yellow acid would squirt out. But goddamnit, that never happened. Turned out, I was human after all.

So this story is about a teenager who goes to the doctor for a endoscopy. The doctors are shocked at what they find. This boy is not human. Or something. Then, the spooky government types show up and try to cover the whole thing up. The boy escapes and runs to a girl he knows who just happens to make fake IDs for a living.

They escape overseas, to a place where they can have great robot sex on the beach. Or is it alien sex? Nobody knows. It's a mystery who or what this kid is. But the journey to freedom, and the relationship between these two horny strangers is fascinating. I really hope there will be a sequel.

Fantastic YA SF. I was left wanting more information at the end, but I very much get why Brooks leaves us that way. A sequel would be fantastic. The third act (the last 100 pages or so) do drag a bit, but only a bit, in terms of pacing. Enough attention is paid to issues of ontology and the posthuman condition that this will be on any syllabus I make from here on out. Recommended. ( )

It was okay. A quick, easy read but nothing special or memorable. I couldn't connect with any of the characters, because they just weren't realistic. Eddi was literally whoever she decided to be, and Robert didn't act like a normal teenage boy. He found out his body was basically a machine, but just took it completely in his stride. The ending was a let down. I wanted to find out HOW Robert came to be the way he was, but we were told nothing and I felt no sense of closure. It was an all right book, though. It wasn't boring and it was interesting enough to keep me reading it with ease. ( )

While I was somewhat unsatisfied by the ending overall this story is very interesting. It all starts when Robert finds himself partially awake during a endoscopy. He has been referred because they think he has an ulcer. What they have found has them perplexed, inside him looks like plastic, not flesh and bone. Then the authorities get involved and his life will never be the same again. Survival is a major consideration at first, but his pursuers are relentless.

It's an intersesting read but I found it somewhat unsatisfying at the end, still an interesting premise. ( )

The novel, Being, encompasses always believing in yourself, you can go anywhere and do anything if you just believe. In the beginning, Robert, the protagonist, goes through going to the hospital without a clue on what was about to happen, and his whole life being changed by finding out he is not human. Throughout the middle of the book, he wards off the likings of the antagonist, Ryan. He also goes looking for a girl who can help him, Eddi. She can give him a whole new identity. So she does, at gunpoint. Soon Eddi and Robert move to Spain so Ryan won't find them and they fall in love. By the end, Ryan finds them and "accidentally" kills Eddi. However, Robert kills Ryan's men but leaves Ryan to suffer by smashing his skull but leaving him alive and Robert leaves with no more feelings for anything. (323/323) ( )
