"This is how a family keeps a secret...and how that secret ends up keeping them. This is how a family lives happily ever after...until happily ever after becomes complicated. This is how children change...and then change the world. When Rosie and Penn and their four boys welcome the newest member of their family, no one is surprised it's another baby boy. At least their large, loving, chaotic family knows what to expect. But Claude is not like his brothers. One day he puts on a dress and refuses to take it off. He wants to bring a purse to kindergarten. He wants hair long enough to sit on. When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl. Rosie and Penn aren't panicked at first. Kids go through phases, after all, and make-believe is fun. But soon the entire family is keeping Claude's secret. Until one day it explodes. This Is How It Always Is is a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it's about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again; parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts; children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don't get to keep them forever"--… (lisätietoja)

I enjoyed this book that was written about, what may be for some, a controversial topic. The story involves a family that is navigating the difficult journey of their child transitioning from a boy to a girl. I felt the characters had depth to them and really felt their hope, their fear and at times their helplessness. This is a journey that affects all family members and I though the author did a good job of showing the impact from both inside the family and externally. Recommended. ( )

A book recommended to me by my niece. I thought it would be good, but it's a storyline that really made me think about parenting and acceptance of your kids' differences and how they should be handled for the child's well-being. I can also relate to this from the child's perspective and how it might feel when you're not sure about your own gender. The plot is face-paced and engaging. Although a controversial topic, it's handled with grace and understanding. ( )

Major Oprah's book club vibes. I got the feeling that the author was like, "Trans kids! That's in the news a lot! I should write about that!" rather than, you know, having deep experience with any trans people. ( )

As a parent, you embody many feelings about your child(ren), but I’ve found the two biggest emotions to stand out besides Love are Hope and Fear.⁣
The parents in this book certainly embody these attributes many times throughout the book. Their youngest child has gender dysmorphia, and as he transitions into a girl, you witness it along with the rest of the family, and friends and peers as well. You get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of other people. When bigotry was shown, I felt anger along with the protagonists. You feel the conflicted emotions of the parents in how they decide to best help their “son”. At times the lessons were a bit saccharine, but that didn’t make them less effective. ⁣⁣
This book will not be everyone; say, if you are someone who doesn’t believe in/agree with transgender people and their journey. But this book does show honesty, that life isn’t perfect for everyone. There is no pretending here ( )

t is rare (but it happens) that a friend reaches out and says you have to read this book and I say I’ve never heard of it. That’s what happened with This is How It Always Is. My friend Tammy, who I haven’t seen in a million years but talk to almost every day is a huge book nerd like myself. So when she told me about this one, it went on the library hold list immediately. I waited and waited. She got her copy, read it, loved it and I kept waiting. Finally it came in. I have to say I was nervous to start it (probably almost as nervous as she was for me to start it) but once I did, all bets were off.

You’ll see reviews that say it made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me think. If you are anything like me, you’ll roll your eyes and scoff. Much to my surprise, in this book, all of those things are true. This family got inside my brain and my heart and they stayed there. When the book was over, I sat in disbelief because I thought I missed something. I thought I skipped a chapter. It was the perfect ending and yet, I was disappointed because it was over and I wanted more and even more disappointed that there isn’t anymore.

So now I pass it to you. Read this book. Then I can have more and we can all be better people as a result. 5 major stars for this one my friends. It’s going to stick with me. Ignore my tagline this time and pick this one up. I promise you, you won’t regret it. ( )

There's a fork in the road.  It seems like there are only two choices.  It seems like the task is to figure out which way to go, left or right, forward or back, deeper or safer, but in fact any if those choices is easy compared to the real trick.  The real trick is you have to forge your own way straight ahead through the trees where there is no path.
