Welcome to Andover, where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship -- only it turns out to be for the towns most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, whom Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then theres the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious M, who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.… (lisätietoja)

Story's an easy five here - a lovely story. The writing is third person present tense, which is my absolute least favorite style other than epistolary. Takes as given a *lot* of stuff that normally gets painted as pretty ugly, and creates a world where I'd actually be comfy living other than the background story-line of villainy. ( )

This was very cute and entertaining, but sometimes a little bit confusing and not very memorable. I think I'm going to continue with the series, because I'm interested to see what's next!
P. S. The romance in this is SO SO SO SO CUTE! ( )

Jess Tran lives in a sort of post-apocalyptic USA, in a small town watched over by two low-ranking superheroes who just happen to be her parents. When the resident supervillians go missing Jess doesn't really notice, as she's too busy trying to live up to her superpowered big sister and trying not to make a fool of herself in front of her crush. The premise to this book is very cute, the action is slow during the early world building but picks up admirably by about the half way point, and the characters are sweet and totally likable. The cast is diverse and our main romance happens to be two girls, with other LGBTQIA teens in the background. Lots to love here for someone looking for a light read.

This book is technically YA and the make out scenes are definitely high school, but it's written in a 3rd-person, present tense and the plot holes and world building holes are large enough to drive buses through so I'll admit that high-school-me would not have lasted long with this book. I am therefore shelving it under Middle Grade, and I don't think the romance/make out scenes are so steamy that a 12 year old can't handle them.

As I said, definite down side in the tense. I find present tense to be a difficult read, and unless there's a real need for it (rarely) I think past tense saves suspense and keeps the reader better contained within the story. Since there was no real need for present tense here it simply created a sort of novice, mediocre fan fiction feel. (Listen, I love FF and recognize lots of good FF are written in present tense, but in a long form work, if not handled very carefully and employed for a good reason it's painful to me.) The world building holes are obvious and off putting, although I do enjoy a lot of the world building and it does an excellent job of investing the reader early. The plot holes are similarly huge, to the point that at times I thought the characters were being deliberately obtuse only to discover chapters later that wasn't the case. A cute story. A fun, fast (short?) read. I will admit I'm glad to let the rest of the series slip by without reading. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something light, etc., just not my cup of tea. ( )

This is a cute superhero rom-com. While it's very YA-focused (all the main characters are high schoolers, and believable ones) it is still enjoyable for readers outside the target age range. At times the plot was predictable, and there were definitely times when I couldn't figure out how the MC missed a clue. However, she did pick up on other things, so I guess she just had a harder time seeing things that impacted her directly.

I appreciated the way both race and gender identity / sexuality were treated here. They were mentioned and discussed, and then any differences were treated as completely normal. I do hope that acceptance is in our future. (Granted, this book did spend most of the time in our MC's friend bubble. It's possible that the rest of the world isn't as accepting as her friends, and that we just didn't see it in this book.)

My biggest issue with this book was the tense. This was written in third-person present tense, and it didn't always seem to fit. It's entirely likely that this is a personal preference item, though, and for many of the sections of the book it didn't pose a problem. It seemed to bug me most during the passive scenes. I was better able to go with it during the action scenes for some reason.

Tense issues aside, I did enjoy this one, and would recommend it to fans of superhero books. ( )

This is everything I was hoping for from Of Fire and Stars! Relatable characters—check. Diversity—check. Super-cute queer romance—check. Teens against the shady government—check. Humour and fast reading—check. Women being awesome—check. I’m fairly sure my heart grew three sizes just from opening it, and my cheeks hurt from smiling by the end.

I’ll freely admit, though, that I am a sucker when it comes to certain cheesy romance tropes and this hit me hard, that way. Mistaken identities! Mutual pining! Accidental confessions! Highly adorkable, all ‘round. The rest of the story’s pretty full of tropes too, the way a lot of teen dystopia and superhero stories are, but the story doesn’t suffer from them. Lee’s built a world and crafted a writing style where that all works. (And really, why shouldn’t Asian readers and queer readers get to see themselves represented in trope-y stories too?)

It’s not a slave to the tropes, though. I can name a handful of moments where Lee surprised me or played against the tropes, and that sold me even harder, I think.

That all said, it did take me a bit to adjust to the present-tense writing, since I’m a lot more used to past, and I (cis, white) felt like the bad guy didn’t need to do the stuff in the warnings, since she was plenty bad already, but hey, that’s fine, it’s not like there aren’t people like that in the world.

But basically, this is a lot of words when I could just flail at you and tell you to read it. (The sequel went on my TBR as soon as I closed the book.)

Warnings: transphobia and anti-Asian racism from the bad guy, including a threat to undo a transition; insinuations of background pro-powers eugenics.
