How did a New York-born, Jewish, former-atheist novelist and screenwriter--a winner of multiple Edgar Awards, whose books became films with Clint Eastwood and Michael Douglas--find himself at the age of fifty being baptized and confessing Jesus as Lord? That's a tale worth telling. From his childhood outside New York City, through his years as college-dropout wanderer and on to his growing success as a writer, Andrew Klavan consumed stories. From novels and plays to movies and the Bible, literature helped him interpret the world and understand his place in it. Dropping out of college to wander the country as an itinerant journalist, he met the woman who became his wife--and tales of marriage have been central to his writing ever since. Wrestling with severe depression that took him to the brink of suicide, his reading of Hamlet and even Freud became crucial life-giving supports. And lying in bed reading Patrick O'Brien's seafaring tales, he found the courage to say a prayer--"thank you"--that overturned his life and led, inevitably, to his baptism in New York City a few days after his father's memorial service. The stories of Western literature led Andrew Klavan to Jesus. This is Klavan's story of that journey.… (lisätietoja)

I really connected with this book in ways I'm still trying to figure out. ( )

My copy quotes Metaxis "superb ... a classic of its kind". Exactly. This is a spiritual biography, and it's brilliant.

Coming to Christ and christian understanding and commitment by a long, painful and yet love strewn route, Kaplan conveys this with brilliant, candid prose.

Andrew Klavan is a famous author of crime novels and movies. This book is the fascinating story of his spiritual journey through life. The road he travelled has been a long and bumpy and one, full of wrong turns, detours, and dead ends. Through all this the Holy Spirit eventually brought him to faith in Jesus as his Savior. I recommend this book because it's a compelling story of God's grace to sinners. In Klavan's story you might find echoes of your own spiritual journey and how God has poured out his grace to you in Christ.

Mr. Klavan's journey from unbelieving and alienated to converted and connected is an interesting one. His descriptions of his childhood are both idyllic and heartbreaking. He doesn't stint in his evaluation of himself as a youth with all his bad behavior. What was most profound to me is the power of true and unconditional love to bring one to God. Mr. Klavan found that love in his wife and experiencing that love is what appears to have opened the path for him to recognize and embrace the love the God has for all of us. I think the other thing that strikes me about this journey is that the author has this absolute need for integrity - for things to make sense - and that allowed him to recognize his relationship with God. Faith-based books range from the saccharine to the pedantic. They can be insipid, haranguing or just plain boring - even to the believer. Andrew Klavan has written a memoir about coming to Christian faith that is none of the above. It is a riveting good read, despite your level of belief or non-belief and unlike many books in this genre, it does not insult the intelligence of the reader.
