Di Auster ho letto una dozzina di libri e l'ultimo 12 anni fa, quindi questo con il corposo 4321 è un ritorno particolarmente apprezzato. L'impianto classico del romanzo, unito all'invenzione della struttura a 4 binari paralleli, crea una narrazione unica e affascinante, un romanzo di formazione alla "sliding doors", verrebbe da dire. Al di là di questo, è un poderoso affresco dell'America del Novecento, più precisamente l'America di Auster dato che il protagonista nasce come lui nel 1947 e il contesto storico-sociale che vive (nonché l'esperienza della Francia e ovviamente la scoperta della letteratura) è proprio la sua. È un Auster meno misterioso e immaginifico del solito: qui la tesi è quella della relazione fra volontà e destino. Infatti:

"Sto dicendo che non saprai mai se hai tatto la scelta sbagliata. Avresti bisogno di conoscere tutti i fatti in anticipo, e l'unico modo per disporre di tutti i fatti è essere in due posti nello stesso momento, ma e impossibile". ( )

This book is ginormous. I have to state that in the very beginning. At 900 pages, this is a book that will take a bit to get through. I was so happy when I received it though because I am a big fan of Auster, which is why I was surprised at how long this book was. He usually has a way of writing that is straightforward and to the point, at least the ones I read.

I will also state that if you are interested in reading an Auster book, this would not be the one I would start with. I would probably begin with his more famous New York Triliogy or one of his others. Even though this was a great book, and it is, I wouldn't say this captures who Auster is or what type of writer he is. That is not to say that this was a bad book, not by a long shot, but this is one that needs easing into.

This book follows Ferguson through four different lifetimes from birth until death, four times from four different angles. It deals with the what ifs that follow us in life- what if path A were chosen instead of Path B? Well, if Path A is taken these things happen and if Path B is taken these things happen. Now what if the life is so changed that Path A and Path B never become a choice? This is essentially what this book is about. What if Ferguson lived his life in 4 different ways, what would become of him?

To say this was an ambitious book is an understatement. This is an epic book, but also not without its flaws. The book rests entirely on Ferguson's shoulders and I felt the issue was that Ferguson was a tough one to like, but that is just me. I also kept forgetting what storyline I was reading as I was reading it, but that is on me and the copy I received. I am not one to whine and moan that I got a galley, as I am so grateful I do, but this one had a very tiny font that I could not increase. I had to put it down, wait for the book to come out, and then purchase it later. I enjoyed it and paid attention much better, but at that point I was about 400 pages in and didn't want to restart it.

Una bona novel·la per llegir amb temps, és força extensa, molt interessant. La vida d'uns grapat de personatges de la comunitat jueva de la ciutat de Nova York, des de l'inici del segle XX fins als anys 70. L'emigrant jueu que arriba al nou món des de Rússia amb un nom impronunciable que els funcionaris d'Ellis Island batejaran com a Ferguson. Els seus tres fills i els nets.
Però la gràcia del relat és el muntatge que en fa l'autor: Quatre vides diferents per aquest mateixos personatges en funció de les eleccions que fan al llarg de les seves vides. Sortides diferents davant d'una mateixa època i uns esdeveniments que els envolten. En un primer moment no acabes d'entendre que passa però de seguida et situes i segueixes les diferents etapes dels quatre personatges: infància, adolescència, joventut i entrada a la vida adulta. Nascuts el 3 de març del 1947, i graduats a la universitat al juny del 1970. Entremig n'hi ha dues vides que s'han estroncat massa joves i al final de la novel·la descobreixers la mort d'un tercer personatge, o sigui que finalment en queda només un de viu fins al final. Durant els anys que narra la novel.la als EEUU, els Kennedy són elegits, també són assassinats, l'home arriba a la lluna, la segregació racial esdevé intolerable, la guerra del Vietnam divideix l'opinió pública americana... tantes i tantes coses que formen part també de la nostra vida.
Referents literaris i cinematogràfics a dojo. I també molts esports que a mi particularment no m'interessen gaire. Però és una manera de conèixer la societat americana: com es viu l'amor, l'amistat, la companyonia, les relacions familiars, les relacions laborals, el món educatiu.... ( )

Ha létezik egyáltalán olyan kategória, hogy Nagy Amerikai Regény, akkor a 4 3 2 1 tutira odatartozik. Auster asztalrogyasztó mesterműve egyszerre himnusz New Yorkhoz, nagyregény a felnőtté válásról, és az USA két végtelenül meghatározó évtizedének, az ötvenes, de főleg a hatvanas éveknek (tudjuk, Vietnam, polgárjogi mozgalmak, Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Nixon, meg a satöbbi) egyik legpontosabb ábrázolása. Mindez az amerikai epikus-realista írásművészet folttalan köntösében: áradó történetmeséléssel, és tűpontosan érzékeltetve (hogy a karunk libabőrös lesz) a kudarc keserűségét éppúgy, mint a test szexuális öntudatra ébredését. Már csak a szöveg szintjén is páratlanul gazdag élményt kapunk, és akkor még ott van az, amit nevezzünk mondjuk A TRÜKK-nek. Olyan trükk ez, ami nem pusztán azért van, hogy a tükörben gyönyörködjön önmagában, hanem hatványozza az olvasatokat, megsokszorozza mindazt az eleve sokat, amit Auster el akar nekünk mondani az emberi kapcsolatokról és a korszak Amerikájáról. A végeredmény pedig egy olyan regény, amelynek a szélei a végtelenbe nyúlnak.

Vannak ugye azok a filmek, amelyeknek kapcsán az ember már a stáblistánál tudja, ez bizony Oscarra van ítélve. No most én nem tudom, egy ilyen impozáns életmű tetején egy ilyen csilli-villi korona elég-e ahhoz, hogy ennyi év után amerikai író újra Nobelt* kapjon, de ha nem, akkor tényleg lövésem sincs, mit kéne csinálniuk hozzá… talán el kéne foglalniuk Svédországot… Szóval senki se mondja, hogy ez a könyv drága. Ennyi pénzért ennyi regényt ritkán kap az ember.

* Már ha lesz egyáltalán Nobel, ugye. De ha Auster nem kapja meg – nem ezért a könyvért, hanem ezért a könyvért is –, akkor őszintén szólva nem is biztos, hogy kell lennie**. (Megjegyzem, Nabokov se kapott, már ezért is pipa vagyok. Ne feszítsék tovább a húrt.)
** Jó, hát meglehet, ez pirinyót erős állítás. A lelkesedés súgja. De az értékelés ilyen lelkes műfaj.
