It took me a while to get into the rotational style of the various speakers in this book (I only expected it to be for the first little bit, then the book would settle into a standard narrative, which it did not).

Once I got used to it, it was often interesting to read a view, then an opposing or contradictory view immediately follow it (Roddenberry was a visionary genius/Roddenberry was a hamfisted hack who didn't play well with others).

After getting through the first 25 years, my immediate thought is, how the hell did Star Trek even get made? There's so much infighting, so many egos, so many opposing "let's do it my way" personalities, that it seems rather shocking that anything got past a planning stage without falling apart.

My biggest takeaway from this entire thing was that Roddenberry was extremely good at preaching the Great Bird of the Galaxy (and lord, how I hate that honorific) gospel, but behind the scenes, he was a skirt-chasing, antagonistic asshole that couldn't see that television and movie making is a collaborative effort, nor the wisdom of surrounding himself with people smarter and more talented than himself. And that he was actually willing to undercut and sabotage those he disagreed with--which was everyone--and harm the Star Trek brand rather than seeing something other than his own vision on the screen.

Oh, and that Gene Coon was the guy we can thank for saving Star Trek.

It'll be interesting to read about the next 25 years. ( )

Enjoyable, but definitely for 'Star Trek' fans A new 'Star Trek' movie, a new 'ST' TV series, the anniversary, YAY! The storied franchise is getting what purports to be the "complete, uncensored, unauthorized oral history" of 'Star Trek'. Whoa.

It's definitely a very in-depth look at The Original Series (TOS) with Kirk, Spock, etc. play by Shatner, Nimoy and the names you know (and if you don't, this book and this review are *probably* not for you. :) ). Gossip, a look at the series behind the scenes and in the writing rooms, fights with NBC and executive meddling, retrospective look backs from everyone from the actors to producers to historians to the Roddenberrys (Gene and Rod), to fans and on.

That said, it's hard to know how "complete" this is. It is an "oral" history as such: the authors/editors took the words of various players and basically created the stories around major episodes, the production, the cartoon, each of the movies and let the subject's words speak for themselves. So there is no contextual narrative, it's really hundreds and hundreds of quotes blocks from various people. It's also familiar to a lot of people. If you've ever read say the author biographies/autobiographies then you'll probably know of some of the dramas and ego clashes and what not.

At first I really liked this idea. I liked having just their words with (I hope!) minimal editing. But as other reviews note: this can get tedious. There is a VERY large cast of people. Some names you'll know (Gene Roddenberry, duh) to relatively obscure (to a more casual fan and maybe to those who are not as into the nitty gritty of the franchise) names. It can get exhausting to remember who's who and why their words are important or what's the significance.

And because it's their words without (?) the editing it's a bit tedious. It can be repetitive to read when you know they're talking about the same event/person/production, etc. It can also be jarring: you really have to know what they're referring to or it's pretty easy to get lost or have to pause. This mostly happened when they were talking about the show itself and they'd switch talking to another episode, for example.

I have to admit though, that I am not as familiar with TOS the series vs. the other, more recent spin-offs. I did and do enjoy the films though, so bits and pieces on the movies were great.

I'm also a bit skeptical as to how "complete" it is. A lot of people have since died, moved on, probably didn't want to talk about it, etc. So while I did learn quite a bit, I would be a bit hesitant to see how "complete" this is, although that's more of a minor blip for me.

If you made it through this review and am still interested, give it a shot. There's probably something for many Trekkies, especially if you're into the original series (people from the future shows/works show up but they are minor cameos and this book ends with 'The Undiscovered Country'). The next volume that looks at 'The Next Generation' through the Abrams films will be out and I'm REALLY looking forward to that one. But after this I'll probably temper my expectations and borrow it from the library like I did with this. ( )

This is the Rashōmon of Star Trek. I found it very enjoyable, many different points of view. ( )

Sitting across from me at a small table in a cluttered room in a Miami cemetery was the bearded rabbi with a small yarmulke resting atop his mop of thick gray hair, who was about to conduct my grandmother Edna's graveside funeral.
