"Alex Delaware and Milo Sturgis investigate the death of Alex's most mysterious patient to date in the sensational new thriller from the master of suspense, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Kellerman. At nearly one hundred years old, Thalia Mars is a far cry from the patients that child psychologist Alex Delaware normally treats. But the charming, witty woman convinces Alex to meet with her in a suite at the Aventura, a luxury hotel with a checkered history. What Thalia wants from Alex are answers to unsettling questions--about guilt, patterns of criminal behavior, victim selection. When Alex asks the reason for her morbid fascination, Thalia promises to tell all during their next session. But when he shows up the following morning, he is met with silence: Thalia is dead in her room. When questions arise about how Thalia perished, Alex and homicide detective Milo Sturgis must peel back the layers of a fascinating but elusive woman's life and embark on one of the most baffling investigations either of them has ever experienced. For Thalia Mars is a victim like no other, an enigma who harbored nearly a century of secrets and whose life and death draw those around her into a vortex of violence. Heartbreak Hotel is classic Delaware and classic Kellerman. Praise for Jonathan Kellerman "Jonathan Kellerman's psychology skills and dark imagination are a potent literary mix."--Los Angeles Times "Kellerman doesn't just write psychological thrillers--he owns the genre."--Detroit Free Press "A master of the psychological thriller."--People"--"Psychologist Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis investigate the murder of woman who led a long life full of dark secrets"--… (lisätietoja)

A marked departure from recent books in this long-running series, Dr. Alex Delaware is asked to visit with an almost 100-year old woman, who lives in a bungalow at the aging Aventura Hotel. After an initial consult, she dies and a vigilant EMT suspects foul play: enter LAPD detective Milo Sturgis and Dr. D. Everyone seems to have loved her, and her caring eccentricity. Alex and Milo dig into her past, wondering how a retired county employee can afford such luxury. Meanwhile, the hotel is barely able to remain in business and itself has a sordid story. 3.5 stars, but I rounded down as I was bored at times. ( )

Well written as would be expected with a decent story but something was missing. Felt the character at the center of the story was far too sketchy. Admittedly the story was built around discovering her past and with what they touched on she seems like a character that would deserve more attention beyond being murdered just weeks before her 100th birthday and having a sketchy questionable past. For some reason, outside of the case being wrapped up nicely, simply felt it left me with questions about some of the people we met. Normally Jonathan Kellerman does a better job of presenting interesting underlying insights into story critical characters even when they are just passing through. In this case the story felt wanting. ( )

Heartbreak Hotel is a murder/mystery book that is set in present day Los Angeles. The book has a beginning middle and an end. There are a lot of characters but the reader is able to keep them all straight. There are concise descriptions of the characters. The author stayed with a story, built the plot, and then ended it by bringing all of the pieces together. This book receives a solid five stars and is highly recommended. ( )

Heartbreak Hotel is another good read from Jonathan Kellerman . Alex Delaware is asked to meet a 99 year old woman at the hotel she has been living in. She promises to reveal why she requested the meeting on their next visit. When Alex arrives at the hotel, he's told that she died. It turns out her death was not by natural causes. But why would someone murder a woman who was close to celebrating her 100th birthday? What secrets was she hiding and from who? ( )

Another interesting mystery for Alex & Milo. Love these characters and their easy friendship! Recurring characters are beginning to show up more, possibly to start their own stories? Maybe? Regardless, as long as the story is good it doesn't matter. This story focused more on old Hollywood and bygone days and was very interesting. Keep up the good work Mr. Kellerman. ( )
