Funny, conversational, and really engaging. It was a mix of eye-opening and routine bits about teenage life, with plenty of big picture activism details sprinkled throughout as well. Some of the statistics are heartbreaking, even as Jazz's personal experience is often (though definitely not always) positive. I listened to the audiobook, but grabbed the paper edition to flip through, and it's worth picking it up to see the photos and interviews that aren't included in the audio version. ( )

It is an odd feeling to read/listen to a memoir from someone that is ten years younger than myself. Nevertheless, having been relatively familiar with Jazz her TLC show, I felt that it was time to read her book 'Being Jazz' - especially since last month was Pride month.

I am glad I read this book.

First off, as a Cisgendered woman, I cannot presume to know what it is like to be Trans. However, Jazz did an excellent job of explaining her experience and the facts in a way that most people could understand.

I mean, some of the subjects discussed felt surface-level, but this memoir is an excellent place to start as a young person wanting to learn about Trans issues or a young Trans person looking for visibility.

As for the narration, it was alright. The accounts felt more like sitting down with a friend in high school and having a conversation than someone reading a story to you, which is an optimal method to get the attention of Teen and Young Adult readers.

Overall, Being Jazz was an intriguing book. It was clear to me, the listener, that Jazz is an intelligent and well-spoken young woman with a clear goal in life to help Trans youth become confident and learn themselves. I sincerely hope that society takes notice and includes more trans representation because it is crucial for all humans to be able to see themselves reflected in the media.

I would definitely recommend this book. ( )

KIRKUS REVIEW
Before she was in preschool, Jazz knew she wasn’t a boy, and she didn’t understand why no one else did. Her parents took her to meet with a well-versed therapist, who told them Jazz is transgender, and they started on a journey with no map.

Obstinate school faculty and officials soon made it clear that there was no protocol for someone like Jazz, and the family’s necessary activism began in earnest, by way of an article in the local paper. That article got the attention of producers of a national TV show, who pursued Jazz’s family until they agreed to take a leap of faith and do an interview. Jazz’s mother became involved in public speaking at conferences, and she and Jazz began their outreach and advocacy work, even starting their own organization and agreeing to do a reality show. As Jennings relates, through it all, she manages to keep it apart from her typical teenage life, replete with summer-camp experiences, cute-but-jerky boys, best friends, and ex–best friends and marked with a passion for art and mermaids. Her outlook is bright, even as she struggles with depression—hereditary and unrelated to being trans. Jazz is fearlessly up front with people about being trans, and her gender meter is pinned on GIRL, but she also touches on gender variations and carefully stresses that not all trans people are like her.

Jazz’s positivity, honesty, frank explanations, and conversational writing style make this an ideal book for trans kids to hand to worried loved ones after they’ve finished reading it. (Nonfiction. 12 & up)

I will start by saying that I am a fan of Jazz Jennings. My daughter and I watch her show, I am Jazz, so I was already familiar with her before starting this book.

This book is a fascinating look at the life of a transgender child. Beginning with Jazz's early childhood, and continuing up until her teen years. Jazz was lucky enough to have an understanding family, but even so she experiences acts of prejudice. This book was really eye opening for me.

The book was written by Jazz, who was I think 15 at the time. So it is not as polished as some other books. The writing style often sounds like it was written by a teen. I listened to the audio version of the book, narrated by Jazz herself. At times her narration felt a little stilted, but overall, a very enthralling experience to listen to this book. ( )

Being Jazz (my life as a transgender teen) is a touching nonfiction book about Jazz Jenning’s transition from male to female as a child in the public eye. She shares the ups and downs about what it's like to grow up as transgender in her quirky way. Jazz transitioned at 5 years old. She has a tv show on TLC, I am Jazz. Jazz ( who’s real name is Jaron Bloshinsky) has a Mom, Dad, older twin brothers, and a big sister. Her siblings are all at college. She has won many awards and is an active LGBTQ advocate.

You should read Being Jazz (my life as a transgender teen) because chances are you don’t know much about being transgender. This book educates you in a jazzy, straightforward way. Jazz is a LGBTQ advacate. She embraces her lifestyle and enjoys helping others. She has a tv show called I am Jazz. I enjoyed this book. That is why you should read I am Jazz. ( )
