Bagging a killer should have been the end of it, but it was only the beginning.Tracker Mackenzie Crow, working at his uncle's bounty hunting business, is not thrilled when an old flame pleads for help. His intuition tells him to scram and not look back, but Mac's conscience won't allow him to say 'no' to finding a lost child in the woods. Not sure where he stands with Kailee, Mac soon finds out: she is married to his old rival and she has kept this from him in order to solicit his expertise.Once in the woods with the Search and Rescue team, Mac comes into his element and within a short time has found the child's trail. He also finds something completely unexpected: a strange set of tracks following the girl. It's clearly the day for unwanted surprises. Deep in the woods, desperately following the trail, Mac comes upon an SAR volunteer face down in the forest with an arrow in his back.Mac, unarmed, presses on and finds the child. In the meantime, the murderer kidnaps Kailee and Mac is the only one with the tracking skills to find the young woman who betrayed him.Six months later, Kailee shows up on Mac's doorstep, pregnant, on the run, and being hunted by nefarious forces. It turns out that "the crazy archer", now deceased, had powerful friends. Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |

This is a nicely written adventure yarn, with a bit of thriller edge to it. In some ways it reminded me of the classic John D. MacDonald stories, but not quite so dark. The writing style lends itself to sitting down and finishing the book in one sitting - it is absorbing, easy to read, and flows nicely. The author's love of the outdoors shines through clearly, and is one of the nicest sources of background colour for the book. The book itself seems to fall neatly into two parts, almost as if they are two novellas with the same set of characters, but the two parts really are part of one whole in terms of story arc.
All in all, I quite enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next one. ( )
