Timothy (*1935) reist in 1951 voor het eerst, en wel naar Heidelberg, om bij zijn zuster die voor de Amerikanen werkt zijn ontsnapping aan het bekrompen lower middle class Engelse milieu van zijn ouders te beginnen. Shelter: Blitz, angst. eerste sexule ervaringen met Jill. wier ouders sterven bij een bombardement van de shelter. Coming Out: in alle opzichten. Het bekrompen, smerige, van alles behalve de eigen kleine omgeving onwetende Engeland van zijn jeugd. Ontsnapping ook van zijn zuster Kath, met Amerikanen naar Parijs en Heidelberg. De weelde van de nieuwe wereld, Amerikaanse enclave in het vernielde Duitsland. Contrst oppervlakkige Amerikaanse smart set en Don die op Kath verliefd wordt, een intellectuele pacifist. De sexuele verleidingen waaraan Tim net niet aan toegeeft, of half. een Epilogue lost een verwikkeling op met twee vrijers van Kath die flikker blijken. De Bildung is vertederend, het beeld van het naoorlogse Engeland heel fraai (dat ijlt nog lang na in Lodges boeken als hij de vaders van hoofdpersonen beschrijft, of problemen met geboortebeperking), de constructie OKI, maar het geheel wel een beetje voordehandkiggend en makkelijk. In 1951, 16 year-old Timothy, the very embodiment of repressed Catholic adolescence, visits his sister in occupied Germany. She is working for the American army, and is able to introduce him to a lifestyle of hedonism that is a far cry from the rationing still in place back home. Timothy bumbles along in this mystifying new world, looking up women’s skirts, consuming ice cream sodas on an industrial scale, and managing to get himself locked in the cupboard in a women-only hostel. Such events combined pleasingly with an intelligent narrative about the contrasting fortunes of the participants in WWII. It was strange to read a book by this author that didn’t contain university professors, and which didn’t centre around literature (though some literature criticism found its way in) and it proves he can produce enjoyable, thought provoking work on other subjects too. Quatrième roman de l'auteur. Pendant l'été de 1951, le double de l'auteur, Timothy, un Anglais de seize ans, se rend en vacances chez sa soeur qui travaille en Allemagne pour l'armée américaine. Selon l'éditeur, il s'agit d'un roman d'apprentissage et d'un roman international écrit sur le modèle de ##Dedalus## (Joyce) et sur celui des ##Ambassadeurs## (James). L'auteur est tout à fait à l'aise dans les épisodes relatant les premiers jeux de séduction auxquels participe le héros. Le contexte historique est bien reconstitué. Introduction, p. 9-19, écrite par l'auteur, en 1993, pour la traduction française du texte anglais de l'édition révisée de 1985.

Very evocative of England during and immediately after WWII, seen through the eyes of a young boy. The novel becomes a little didactic, and loses some its charm and plausibility towards the end. The epilogue was not a good idea. However, still an enjoyable read. ( )
