Lula Mae's family can't afford a dog, so she "makes do" with one of their chickens. "Pookie" proves to be a pretty good dog. Mama says, "Call it anything you like, but it's not coming in my house" - but in the end, Pookie earns her spot on Lula Mae's bed by leading the family to the missing Baby Berry.

My Dog's a Chicken is a funny easy read by Susan McElroy. In this story Lula Mae really wanted a dog but her family couldn't afford it so she decides to make one of her chickens a dog. Her family gives her a hard time and she continues to prove them wrong with all of the things her chicken does to act like a dog. In the end the chicken helps find the baby so her mom finally lets the chicken sleep in the house because he is a "rescue dog". I think this cute story shows children to make the best out the situation and to think positively and in the end it will turn out just right. ( )
