This was a pretty good sequel. It wasn't as exciting as the first one for me, because in The Cage, we don't really know what's happening or why these people were kidnapped and we're finding things out as we go. I did like seeing the different menageries in this book, especially the Hunt. It was so sad seeing those animals harmed again and again for the Kindred's entertainment. I liked seeing more of Cassian and how much he actually cares for Cora. The story moved at an okay pace, there were some spots in the middle that were a bit slow, but the alternating points of view helped. Leon was a lot more interesting in this book, watching him try to survive and make deals as he slinks around the tunnels was fun. There was one part I didn't like, but I did sort of see it coming Lucky dying was totally unfair. Of any of the characters, I think he deserved it the least. He was so sweet and cared about the animals. Ugh :'( The Gauntlet sounds good and I'm excited to read it. The narrator on this does a great job of the different voices and helped me get into the story. ( )

Road to the Gauntlet- 3.5 stars...

The Hunt is the second book in The Cage series by Megan Shepherd. After Cora and her friends failed escape attempt, they have all been placed in new enclosures in the menagerie that are more demeaning and restrictive. They are forced to live, work and sleep in terrible conditions and are treated like the animals living there. According to their old Kindred leader, Cassian, their only chance of getting out of there and ensuring that the human race is treated as an intelligent species is for Cora to participate in and win the Gauntlet...

I appreciate the originality in this series and I really like the alternate world it's set in but the plot fell short for me in this book. I think for me it suffered from Second Book Syndrome. There is a lot going on but nothing really happens- just very anti-climatic. Then of course we're left with a huge cliffhanger at the end insinuating all of the major plot points will happen in the final book. Shepherd usually delivers a pretty good story though so I'm hoping the next book will pack a punch and make up for what this one lacked. ( )

This book wasn’t as good as the first book in the series. Cora is trying to balance serving as a lounge singer in the menagerie The Hunt and spending time learning to use her telekinetic abilities in secret lessons with Cassian. It felt like there was a lot of waiting for something to happen in this book.

The whole books seems to be building to Cora running through the Gauntlet; a series of trials that are supposed to tell whether or not a species is intelligent enough to be considered one of the main species and gain full rights. With all this build up toward the Gauntlet (which I was looking forward to), I ended up being disappointed by the sudden change in direction that the story took towards the end.

The story jumps around between all of the different characters and, while this worked okay, it didn’t work great. You never get to really engage with any of the characters all that well. Cassian also wasn’t in the story a ton which I found disappointing.

Given how much I loved the first book, I was somewhat disappointed in this book. It was okay but I just found myself struggling to stay engaged in the story. This book is pretty much straight sci-fi with none of the interesting elements of survival the first book had.

Overall this was an okay continuation of this YA sci-fi series. I didn’t like it as much as the first book and had more trouble engaging with the story. I thought the shift in plot direction towards the end of the book was disappointing as well. Right now I am not sure if I will continue with this series or not. As of right now I have no desire to read more about these characters and story. ( )

If I hadn't been reading this on my beloved Kindle, I would have hurled the book across the room when I got to the final page. Another cliffhanger! After following our heroes from peril to peril wondering who, if anyone, they could trust, I wasn't ready for them to be in even more peril at the end. One advantage to this very uncomfortable ending is that I am ready to pre-order the next book in this series as soon as I see that it is available.

Potential spoilers for those who haven't read book 1 - The Cage.

After their unsuccessful escape attempt from the habitat that the Kindred designed for our heroes, they find themselves split up and in less desirable situations. Nok and Rolf are in a giant doll house being observed by Kindred scientist Serassi who is threatening to take Nok's baby from her as soon as it is viable. Leon has escaped to the drecktubes and found a very unsafe refuge with the Mosca. Mali, Cora and Lucky find themselves in a scenario called the Hunt where they are replicating an African Safari. Lucky is working with the animals who are shot, revived, and shot again. Cora is a singer in the lounge.

Cassian is training her to take part in the Gauntlet which could prove that humans are an intelligent species. However, his opinion that they are is definitely a minority opinion among the Kindred. So her training has to be kept secret. He is training her to use her psychic powers which cause her to have headaches and nosebleeds if she overuses them. Cora is looking for a way to cheat the Gauntlet because, in her opinion, that's what humans do. This is an alien concept to the Kindred.

All of our characters are in great danger as they are treated as specimens in a Kindred zoo,

If you like action, plotting, and characters you don't know if you can trust, this is the book for you. If you hate cliffhangers, buy this one and sit it on a shelf until the next one comes out which will hopefully come to some sort of resolution. ( )
