"The Great War is over, and change is in the air, in this novel that brings to life the exciting days of early British radio...and one woman who finds her voice while working alongside the brilliant women and men of the BBC. London, 1926. American-raised Maisie Musgrave is thrilled to land a job as a secretary at the upstart British Broadcasting Corporation, whose use of radio--still new, strange, and electrifying--is captivating the nation. But the hectic pace, smart young staff, and intimidating bosses only add to Maisie's insecurity. Soon, she is seduced by the work--gaining confidence as she arranges broadcasts by the most famous writers, scientists, and politicians in Britain. She is also caught up in a growing conflict between her two bosses, John Reith, the formidable Director-General of the BBC, and Hilda Matheson, the extraordinary director of the hugely popular Talks programming, who each have very different visions of what radio should be. Under Hilda's tutelage, Maisie discovers her talent, passion, and ambition. But when she unearths a shocking conspiracy, she and Hilda join forces to make their voices heard both on and off the air...and then face the dangerous consequences of telling the truth for a living. London, 1926. American-raised Maisie Musgrave is thrilled to land a job as a secretary at the British Broadcasting Corporation, whose use of radio is still new, strange and electrifying. As she becomes caught up in growing conflict between her two bosses she uncovers a shocking conspiracy.

This was fun to read as Maisie comes across many different personalities at her new job with the BBC. There was lots of activity in preparing various types of broadcasts and the conflict between the two bosses: one who wants only to broadcast conventional ideas and the other wants all kinds of ideas. I thought it got a bit far-fetched when the unconventional boss, Hilda Matheson, had connections to MI5. But in the author’s notes at the end, it said that she was a real person who did do some work in the Secret Services, although this was not a fictionalized biography. I enjoyed this story and would read another by this author. ( )

Well researched and moved along at a breathless pace by a vibrant collection of modern women, real and imagined, who worked at the BBC when radio was so new that it was still considered a passing fad at best, or the work of spiritualism at worst.

I'm a sucker for British period pieces and this one did not disappoint. Can anyone pass this along to the folks at Masterpiece Theatre? A mini-series would be just the thing.

I'd love to know more about Hilda Matheson and her pioneering work as Director of Talks. So much fun! A satisfying read for a holiday or long weekend. ( )

This book might be more interesting to me than to the average reader because I am hugely interested in BBC Radio. I love the talks, the plays, the interviews, the lovely voices. I listen to it frequently through the app, and it can surround me with an atmosphere I find at once stimulating and soothing.

This book takes a fictional character, Maisie Musgrave, and plants her in the middle of a bunch of real people, circa 1926. BBC Radio is in its early days. Some view the new medium with suspicion. Others want to use it for their own ends, to shape the views of the nation. But one woman, Hilda Matheson (real person) sees its potential to get the public thinking, to present multiple sides to sensitive issues, to familiarize people with other places and ways, to ask questions and allow individuals to draw their own conclusions.

The historical content in this book is fantastic. It's a real world, there are never any false notes hit; the details feel perfect. The characters live and breathe right off the page. Most of the plot centers on things that are accurate history. In the tug of war between various directors at BBC, Maisie gets a front row seat as a secretary. The job is a lifesaver for her; she comes to it in desperate need but with no knowledge whatsoever about radio. Her education is on-the-job, and before many months pass she is a total convert to this wave of the future. Fascinating scenes show just how groundbreaking the broadcasts were, and how innovative it was to establish totally new precedents for radio. The differences between the spoken word and the written word are well handled.

When a little bit of fictional intrigue is introduced, it feels like it belongs. There's some Fascist/Nazi propaganda circulating, and a conspiracy to restructure the BBC so that it can soft-pedal these notions to an unsuspecting public. Maisie does a little detective work, but this is not a dime-a-dozen mystery novel. Her education at the BBC and her evolving thoughts on career and marriage feel like the real plot threads.

Because this book deals with some real historical figures, it does not gloss over their real moral choices and known proclivities. It's the 1920's and...well, stuff was going on. These things don't figure too heavily in the plot, but they're there. ( )

I didn't want this book to end so I read it a bit at a time. Engrossing, fascinating view of the early days of the BBC and the rise of fascism in Europe, from the POV of a young Canadian girl. ( )
