Alabamassa on hyväksytty laki, joka abortteja tehneitä lääkäreitä vankeudella. Amnesty International on kampanjoinut muuttaakseen Argentiinan tilannetta, jossa nainen voi joutua vankilaan keskenmenon vuoksi. Muitakin vastaavia esimerkkejä todellisuudesta varmasti löytyy. Ainoastaan romaanin muusta tyylistä poikkeava epilogi ei täysin vakuuta. Siinä on liikaa halpaa komediaa. ( )
Orjattaresi oli ensimmäinen kirja, jonka Atwoodilta luin ja jäin heti koukkuun! Orjattaresi on dystopia naisesta, joka joutui fundamentalistien luoman yhteiskunnan hampaisiin. Häneltä viedään koko elämä. Monien muiden tavoin nainen päätyy ns. parempaan perheeseen, jossa hänen ainoana tehtävänään on toimia synnytyskoneena. Koulutuslaitoksissa naisista kasvatetaan kuuliaisia orjattaria.Kirjan tarina kertoo yhden naisen tarinan, jolta viedään tavallinen elämä ja jonka ainoa tehtävä on synnyttää lapsi.
