"A lush, thrilling debut--a publishing event already the subject of an article in The New York Times--about a year in the life of a uniquely beguiling young woman, set in the wild, alluring world of a famous downtown New York restaurant. "Let's say I was born when I came over the George Washington Bridge ..." This is how we meet unforgettable Tess, the 22-year-old at the heart of this stunning debut. Shot like a bullet from a mundane past, she's come to New York to escape the provincial, to take on her destiny. After she stumbles into a coveted job at a renowned Union Square restaurant, we spend the year with her as she learns the chaotic, punishing, privileged life of a "backwaiter," on and off duty. Her appetites are awakened, for food, wine, knowledge and experience; and she's pulled into the thrall of two other servers--a handsome bartender she falls hard for, and an older woman whose connection to both young lovers is murky, sensual, and overpowering. These two will prove to be Tess's hardest lesson of all. Sweetbitter is a story about discovery, enchantment, and the power of what remains after disillusionment"--… (lisätietoja)

Couldn't finish it. The restaurant trade is just too over the top for me--too many drugs, too many crazy relationships. ( )

One of my favorites book to read negative reviews for. Unfortunately I really enjoyed the audio book narrator's voice. ( )

I didn't really start enjoying this book until more than halfway through, and even then I crossed the finish line feeling a bit like a rubbernecker. The language felt affected, too poetic (I don't really get most poetry, don't really feel it), and rather than enhancing the story it overwhelmed it. There are entire pages in which nothing happens but many things are described. But, there is a story here. Tess arrives in New York a dewy-eyed, but damaged (aren't we all?) optimist, out to begin her life by getting a job in a restaurant. She doesn't seem to have any ambition beyond that, which I can kind of relate to actually, being a person who really just wants to enjoy going to work every day. But she gets drawn into the bad habits of restaurant life: drug-fueled late nights and inappropriate relationships. She falls for a complicated man and tries to change him-- the classic mistake of the 22-year-old. She goes into a spiral of irresponsible, self-destructive behaviour that ends up forcing her to veer away from her path. Sweetbitter is a good title for this book-- the cheeky inversion is just pretentious enough, and my impression is as mixed. ( )

For some reason I thought this was a memoir, until I noticed it says "a novel" on the front, whoops. It was short and started out with intriguing descriptions of restaurant life and getting thrown headfirst into NYC living, so I stuck with it. This is pretty plot-less, and honestly I didn't enjoy the second half which focused on the relationships rather than the restaurant. It was still an interesting slice of life focusing on things I have never experienced (NYC life, working in a restaurant), so those were fun perspectives to experience. ( )

The huge overload of positive gushy blurbs on back cover really should have been my clue that this one would be massively boring and poorly written. (A book that's actually well written and interesting just does not need that many blurbs swearing it's great in order to lure readers.)

Reading this was as painful as mowing a large lawn in the height of a South Florida summer with blisters all over every inch of your feet and hands. I didn't care about any character on any page. Didn't seem like the author did, either. I wish negative stars were an option. ( )

This debut is a quintessential coming-of-age story set in a remorseless, unusual city. Time and place are superbly established: the setting is the behind-the-scenes milieu of a celebrated restaurant in 2006 Manhattan. Propelled by "unbridled, unfocused desire" but still essentially naive, 22-year-old Tess has fled an empty life in the Midwest and landed a coveted job as a server in a restaurant that strongly resembles the famous Union Square Café. At first crushingly lonely and exhausted by the arduous routine, Tess is mentored by longtime senior server Simone. Despite warnings to avoid falling for bartender Jake, and willfully blind to the strange relationship between Jake and Simone, Tess begins a passionate affair with him. Meanwhile, she becomes an accepted member of a select society of overworked, terminally tense and bone-tired wait staff. Danler writes about food with sensory gusto as Tess learns how to distinguish the fine points of every wine, how to identify an heirloom tomato or oyster, how to shave a truffle. Tess also learns how to get seriously drunk and snort lines of coke. Early on, she defines the foods and condiments that are sweet and those that are bitter—and her relationships with Simone and Jake are ultimately just that: a sweet time of consummate happiness followed by bitter betrayal. Throughout, Danler evokes Tess's voice—intimate, confiding, wonderstruck, depressed—with deft skill.
