One night Tila stumbles home, terrified and covered in blood. She's arrested for murder, the first by a civilian in decades. The San Francisco police suspect involvement with Verve, a powerful drug, and offer her twin sister Taema a chilling deal. Taema must assume Tila's identity and gather information -- then if she brings down the drug syndicate, the police may let her sister live. But Taema's investigation raises ghosts from the twins' past. The sisters were raised by a cult which banned modern medicine. But as conjoined twins, they needed surgery to divide their shared heart--and escaped. Taema now finds that Tila discovered the links between the cult and the city's underground. Once unable to keep secrets, the sisters will discover the true cost of lies.--… (lisätietoja)

This took a long time to get started. The conjoined twins part never seemed integral to the narrative. For me the sci-fi elements seemed largely irrelevant to the characters and the story. ( )

This is a fun. exciting read. The plot is interesting, with lots of twists and turns, and I really liked the two sisters and the relationship between them. I had a few minor quibbles, I thought some of the exposition was very clunky, especially at the beginning, and the main romance felt cliched and was not very engaging. But overall, I really enjoyed reading this book, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good sci-fi thriller. ( )

This book was REAL good. It was intense, kept me reading, and suspenseful. I loved the world that was created and how everything ended up coming together.

In False Hearts, Tila and Taema, are twins, conjoined until they are 16, and separated when they escape a cult they've belonged to since birth. The are trying to live normal lives in San Francisco, when Tila is accused of murder. The plot that ensues is heart racing, complex, and full of mysteries to be solved.

I loved how the story was told, alternating perspectives between Tila and Taema - present, and past, revealing things about Mana's Hearth, and what Taema is going through to save Tila. I really enjoyed each girls voice - distinctive, yet similar because they are twins. The story was well paced, the writing was easy to read, and I loved the descriptions of future San Francisco and the Hearth.

The mystery element was also really well done - I don't read a lot of mystery though, so it's not much coming from me. I loved how things unfolded and how Taema worked things out bit by bit. The culmination of all the little threads was so well done as well. Loved it.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the world created by Laura Lam. I can't wait to get to the next book in this world. ( )

Can I tell you how much I LOVE this book???? Because I do - I really, really do! I don't know how there could be more added to it, but I want more... Millions and millions of more stories about Taema and Tila, about the adventures that they will get up to now that they each know so much more about the other.

Taema proves time and time again that she will go to any lengths to protect her sister, the person who had been her other half until they were separated upon their arrival in the outside world from their cult home of Mana's Hearth. They shared everything for the first sixteen years of their lives be being conjoined twins, unable to truly have one moment of complete solitude as the other was always there. It was amazing to read a tale that seemed so vibrant about the possibilities of the future, in a world where something like conjoined twins would no longer exist due to the vast advances in medical science.

Appearances, sexuality, all are very fluid in this world. Virtual reality drugs have made crime almost nonexistent. Amazing that an organized crime group could possibly exist in such an idyllic society, but there always seems to be a way in EVERY utopian world.

[a:Laura Lam|5806077|Laura Lam|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1458843026p2/5806077.jpg] has delivered a world that I loved and found myself dreaming of even when I put the book down to go to sleep. I would devour anything that was like this novel, beautifully written with characters that captured my attention and didn't let go even when I reached the final page. I highly recommend this one - 5 stars and two enthusiastic thumbs up!!!! ( )

False Hearts by Laura Lam is the first science fiction novel from the author that brought us the Micah Grey fantasy YA trilogy, which started with Pantomime. In further contrast with her earlier books, False Hearts is also not YA. (I would be fine giving in to a teen to read, however — I certainly read "worse" in my teens.)

This is a moderately dark book although this is not because of a dystopian setting. At least, not what I would call a straightforward dystopian setting. It's more of a utopia gone slightly awry. The government seems a little bit questionable, but it's mainly the obvious bad guys — drug cartel, cult leader — who are up to no good. Since the story deals directly with these people, it's falls firmly on the darker side of neutral.

I enjoyed this book, which was told from the points of view of both formerly conjoined twins. I think of Taema as the main character and the central story follows her as she tries to work out what happened to her sister and why Taking on her sister's identity and going undercover forces her to question who she is and what her limits really are, which is an interesting journey for the readers to follow her on. Meanwhile, Tila writes about the twins' youth in the cult of the Hearth and their escape to San Francisco.

Overall, this book is a science fiction thriller and I think it would make an excellent movie. Taema's encounters with the drug cartel are exciting, dangerous and drive the story forward. Meanwhile, the twins' origin story has both happy and sinister moments. Get on it, Hollywood.

I recommend False Hearts to fans of science fiction, especially near-future science fiction. Readers of thrillers will hopefully also enjoy it. There is another book, Shattered Minds, set in the same world but with different protagonists, which I am now keen to read when I can find time in my reading schedule.
